We have a 1988 Post 46 and want to add speakers in the cockpit. Has anyone added them in the overhang over the door and if so, what brand speakers did you install and how did you run the wires.
Try something with blue tooth to avoid the wire runs? We use a quality Bose and put it anywhere on the boat we might be. The battery life is excellent.
My 91 had no space overhead to do flush mounts. There was space 8" above the floor on the starboard side just below where the electric cable enters the bulkhead next to the cockpit freezer. On the port side there's room just near the steps and into the tackle Locker cavity. I did run a new audio cable from the rear of the stereo down through the engine room and out to a new weather proof, volume / impedance match control. That way you can turn on the exterior speakers and also control the volume for the cockpit speakers. I used DC gold 6 " Marine speakers. 4 ohm to match the other speakers. If you need specs, no problem, I am on the boat for my summer nourishment.
Josie and her son put a few of these JBL Blue-tooth gizmos onboard last year. WOW, loud and clear. Local volume or master from your phone or main stereo. So far, sitting in the open helm area, they get morning damp but never sprayed on directly. My fancy built in speakers went to poo in a year and grills started rusting out in 6 months. Looking forward to get more this fall.
I was going bluetooth for a while. They are making some pretty big battery powered bluetooth speakers these days (with 8 and 10 inch woofers, etc.) but I still wanted something built in. I had a pair of these sitting around unused https://www.energy-speakers.com/products/take-classic/?sku=TK-CLASSIC-IO5 so I wound up mounting them lengthwise under the gunnels on either side of the cockpit. I am powering them with an infinity bluetooth amp, no headunit necessary. It is discontinued but still available at crutchfield https://www.crutchfield.com/S-dO0Wx7GobAJ/p_108K2/Infinity-Kappa-K2.html It sounds fantastic and was very reasonable. I ran the wires back behind the side panels and down into the rear of the engine room, then back up into the rear closet on the port side just inside the main cabin. Mounted the amp on the false wall inside that covers the wire runs going from the engine room to the ceiling. I have the bluetooth RGB controller for my color changing cockpit lighting in the same cabinet (runs around under the cockpit gunnels.) I'll try to take and post some pictures tomorrow.
