I installed a free fall windlass 4 years ago. Love it. Fast deployment where you want it. Chain only. I went one oversize with a heavier anchor. I boat in Georgian bay so chain rode is preferred over rope. I have had no issues with this unit at all.

What windlass do you have now? Best bet if at all possible is to get a high quality one that fits right where the old one did with no modifications to the boat. 13 years isn't very long... seldom used? Many of these are rebuildable.

Our Carver came with a Maxwell Freedom windlass. I spent $200-300 trying to get it working. Finally had to saws-all it out and replaced it with a Maxwell RC-8. The new RC-8 uses all the same electrical and switching so it was relatively easy. The RC-8 has work well with 50' chain and 200' rope.
