I'm looking to watch some yachting/boating/fishing/liveaboard moves involving small to medium size boats/yachts, anything inspirational for the family. What comes to mind are the few popular flicks like:

    "Captain Ron"
    "Overboard"
    "Jaws"
    "Perfect Storm"
    ........
and a new "All is Lost" (2013)

I don't care much about big boat movies like:
    "Titanic"
    "Love boat"

    What would be your favorites?

I'm not sure the Perfect Storm is the perfect family flick, unless you want them to stay at home...

You gotta to show them all the dangers of boating upfront. "Captain Ron" has already covered most of them. :)

You forgot to put "White Squall" on the list.

By far my favorite movie, and great quotes from Jeff Bridges, and some scenes of the Carolina's at the end as well.

I couldn't agree more. It's a fantastic movie promoting the boating industry.

    Maybe a good family learning flick;
This is what happens when you think with your head in the wrong place.
This is what happens when you force your blind friends to follow.
This is what happens when you follow a blind leader.
This is what happens when you don't keep up with the equipment on your ship.

This is your brain on, on, on, something else than the safety of your ship and friends.

I do point out this movie (perfect storm) as a learning tool.

BTW, I hate Clooney and it was a better ending for him.

Bless his heart, he took the dive in "three kings" with numb-nuts also.

    Favorite Boating Movie

My favorite sea based movie has got to be "Master and Commander: The Far aside of the World" with Russell Crowe. Fantastic movie, one I can watch over and over again.

Just saw All is Lost. All wasn't lost - the popcorn was good. Seriously, the movie was interesting although it would be easy to pick apart some of the realities. Well, the list of pick-aparts is fairly long, but nonetheless I think it is still a movie worth seeing as there are lessons that could be learned from it. And nice it didn't have Hollywood drama like a crying chick or fights with a captain.

    Thanks for the review.

I just watched the Norwegian 2012 "Kon Tiki". Not exactly a boat movie but gives you a good sense of the time and technological progress going back to 1947.

I haven't seen this new dramatized version, but I did recently view Heyerdahl's actual documentary and read his book. I thought both were incredible and worth my time invested in the book and movie. I guess surviving the war as all these guys did can make you feel like you can do anything.

Excellent and one of my favorites, but I'd still put "Mister Roberts" just ahead of "The Caine Mutiny".

So. I'm making a list and checking it twice. Just in time for Xmas. :)

"Captain Ron" (how to fix and fall in love with an antique yacht while learning to navigate and sail with an imposter captain Ron)
"Overboard" (how not to fall overboard, learn your lessons and repossess your yacht)
    "Jaws" (just plain classic)
"KonTiki" (try it before you buy it, your first boat, I mean)
"Master and Commander" (add your comments)
    "Moby Dick"(add your comments)
    "Mister Roberts" (add your comments)
"The Caine Mutiny" (add your comments)
    "The Pirates of the Caribbean"
    "Dead Calm"
    "Cape Fear"
    "Mutiny on the Bounty"
    "White Squall"
    .....
    "All Is Lost"

.... please add your other pirate and classic movies
