Not sure the common car filter from Wix was always in a Wix box at many part shops.
In the early eighties I started working with a great independent auto part shop in north Jax.
Two brothers ran an good ole store from what looked like an antique drug store.
They put the Wix filters on the counter for all of my orders.
Explained to me then; Wix made the filters for most filter brands, they just cut out the middle man, cost for orange paint, fancy boxes and advertising. It offered them an extra coin while selling a premium part at a lower price. Since then, It's been Wix or NAPA oil filters used for us and our customers, less special orders.

I don't think anybody can explain who Wix supplies to, Who cares; It will cost more anyway.
