Two starters in one day…

What are the odds of having two starters fail in one day?

went to fire up the mains this morning (16V2000s) and port wouldn’t crank. Just a click but nothing more. Batteries good (all new batteries a month ago), emergency flap shut downs open, fire system ok.

during troubleshooting I turned off the starboard engine and restarted it a couple of times after checking the fire system and shut down flap. Cranked and started fine except that the starter kept spinning after start.

turned out both starters failed, in different ways on the same days. Both were replaced during engines rebuilt 4 and 5 years ago and one had actually already failed after just a year…

Original starters were Bosch made in Germany… new MTU starters made by Prestolite are now made in… china. 20% lighter, cheap metal, lasted 3 years.

i had two spares on board and my MTU mechanic was able to come right away so I didn’t have to do it myself

going to try to get the Bosch rebuilt.

I don’t know yet and I don’t know if we ll know for sure

That’s a lot of “know” to say but we may not know anything
