Seems to be a chronic problem in some areas. https://travel.state.gov/content/tr...eladvisories/the-bahamas-travel-advisory.html
I had seen this a while ago and my thoughts are it mainly applies to places that I avoid or only use for cheap fuel and maybe an overnight stop. Those places being Freeport and Nassau. Although the Abacos have had some issues (atleast last year) that was surprising to me. I think a similar advisory was issued last year at about this time.
Only NAS and Freeport Nothing new. Only dangers in the out Islands are landsharks trying to charge you $25 for a lobster tail or $5 to let you dump a bag of garbage in a public dumpster on Gtown government dock.
Going to have to change my avatar. Freeport was the first foreign country I made it to on my own keel. Cruised from Little Creek Virginia. Stayed a night at a resort casino in Freeport in the eighties. I took a luggage bag with a suit and leather jacket hung in it . Long story short, when I got to about South Carolina on the return trip, went for my jacket, unzipped the bag only to find a couple old rugs woven out of rags that closely matched the bags original weight so I wasn't tipped off. entirely forgot about that incident.
We were in the Bahamas in 2000, had a good time in the Abacos. Stopped in Lacaya on our way back, two crimes occurred near us. A 30'+ cc was stolen from a SF first night they were there and a woman's purse was stolen off their boat when they had left the boat... I assume things are no better there nowadays. We have some friends that want us to meet them in Eleuthera this summer...anyone familiar with problems in that area?
I hate to say it but you have to be diligent whenever you travel outside of your home region in the day and age. I recently had a gold bracelet removed from my wrist when I dozed off on a plane from Paris to Milan. You'd think it would be safe on a bloody plane.
I have not heard of any issues on Eleuthera and am monitoring the situation as it is on list of places to visit this summer.
Eleuthera, Exumas etc are the safest. We never even lock the boat there. Abacos has had a couple of minor incidents recently, Marsh Harbor I think. Now dinghies, tenders and outboards are another issue. We never leave the tender in the water overnight anywhere.
I would say that anywhere a tourist goes in the Bahamas, isn't any less safe than anywhere a tourist should go in Miami,FL. Now if you decide to go visit the ghetto in the heart of Nassau, well that's always been sketchy.
