UAV's instead of big navies, no prisoners taken

It doesn't have to be some BIG navies response, with all the 'diplomacy' problems, and courts, and jails, etc, etc.
These are uneducated young men that live by the gun and do the bidding of some big guy on shore. They won't continue to do that bidding if they know for certain there is an 'eye-in-the-sky' watching their every move, and capable of raining firepower from the sky. The entire are could be covered by one or two Orion P3's with proper cameras, or even unmanned hi-flyers. ANY small vessel caught out away from shore with weapons (RPG's etc) onboard is quite obviously not just fishing, and therefore subject to elimination. Elimination could also be carried out with small UAV's operated by remote control by a few highly skilled computer gamers controlled by some highly qualified supervisors.

Live by the gun, die by the gun.

Much less costly, and more effective that BIG navy presence. I'll bet it would only take about 4 weeks at the most for these guys to stop venturing offshore in small boats with weapons.

I hope they let that other prisoner go back ashore. I think it would be much more productive than locking his ass up in a prision over here to the tune of 50K per yyear to the American taxpayer. Let him tell his story and then let him venture out again for the eye-in-the-sky program

Released (dead or alive) he's a local hero. The 50K a year is well spent. Then let him send letters home telling about his day's activities with the prison gangs or better yet videos. Now that will be a deterrent.

Even when you lose, you learn.

Sending him back to Somalia would not be the best idea. He's now up to speed on what went wrong and what to do differently next time. He has specific information that he didn't have before.

Living in a US prison is like living in royalty compared to how he lives in Somalia! But, I agree that he could bring back information if set free in Somalia........ Then again there's Guantanimo Bay, now that would be a good place for him.

Thye only information that piece of manure can bring back is "Don't F around with American ships."

The only thing he saw or heard was three simultaneous shots followed by a big hurrah. Let's hope it is the beginning of the end for these scum.

Somali pirates seize two more ships and attack third

ON BOARD NRP CORTE-REAL (Reuters) – Somali pirates hijacked two more cargo vessels and opened fire on a third on Tuesday in attacks that showed their determination to continue striking shipping in the area's strategic waterways.
The capture of the Greek-owned MV Irene E.M. and Togo-flagged MV Sea Horse were a clear sign the sea gangs have not been deterred by two raids in recent days in which U.S. and French special forces have killed five pirates.

The U.S. and French have set a very good example. I'm sure that nobady can act without the authorization of the flag states. Hopefully they continue in the example of the past few days and don't delay in saying 'Go get them'.

I think the cat is out of the bag, so to speak, if even only a few of the bad guys can read a newspaper or watch CNN. They learned:

    1) Keep your head down
    2) Especially, don't everybody stick their heads up out of the hatch for a
    look-see at the same time.
    3) Americans don't get mad--they get even.
    4) Oh, and they're pretty good shots.
    5) The easy money is to be had going after the Wimp-flagged.

    Somali Pirates Seize American-owned Tug
    April 11th, 2009

In a developing story coming from the Gulf of Aden, an American-owned tug has been hijacked by Somali pirates. The tug was manned by 16 crew and sailing under the Italian flag. It was towing two barges at the time of the hijacking - approximately 0800 GMT. At this time, it is unclear as to the exact location the tug was seized and the name of the tug. More to come as this story develops.

A few other things I hope they learned are:
    1) They made themselves look like totally incompetant fools in the eyes of the world.
    2) Their employer's retirement plan stinks.
    3) They're like the idiot gang members who spray a neighborhood with bullets in the hope of hitting something. The sniper's rule is 1 bullet-1 kill.
    4) There will no longer be any tollerance and certainly no sympathy.

I'm curious as to the barges whereabouts. Every account I've read said she WAS towing barge's at the time of hijacking. Did they set them adrift or are they still attached to the tug? Anybody know any details?

BBC News online: New wave of Somali pirate attacks

There have been an estimated 10 hijackings by Somali pirates this month
Somali pirates have hijacked a fourth vessel in 48 hours, seizing a Lebanese-owned cargo ship.

The 5,000-tonne Togo-flagged MV Sea Horse was taken by gunmen in up to four skiffs, Nato officials said.

Earlier, pirates hijacked a Greek-owned bulk carrier, the MV Irene, in the Gulf of Aden a day after Somali raiders captured two Egyptian fishing boats.

Analysts say the gangs are clearly not put off by recent US and French hostage rescues that left several bandits dead.

Somali pirate leaders - who have generally treated captives well in the hope of winning big ransom payouts - vowed on Monday to avenge the deaths.

Pirates claim to have captured a ship with toxic waste
    Tuesday, April 14th, 2009 at 9:18 am
    Horseed Media
    Bosaso, Puntland

Somali pirates captured two Egyptian fishing trawlers, which they say were fishing illegally in Somali waters. The pirates also hijacked an Italian vessel owned by Microperi shipping company based in Italy.

On Monday, the Somali pirates holding an Italian vessel off the coast of Somalia, say the ship is tugging a container full with toxic waste.

The Italian tugboat was seized by pirates off Somalia’s north coast on Saturday.

According to sources close to the pirates told our reporters in Bosaso, that the hijacked boat was tugging a container with toxic waste, the pirates claim the toxic was being dumped in Somali waters.

Horseed Media could not verify the pirates claims, the hijacked ships are currently off the coast of the town Las Qorey, (North eastern Somalia).

The Foreign Ministry in Rome confirmed 10 of the 16 crew members are Italian. According to Microperi, the Italian company that owns the ship, of the six remaining crew members, five are Romanian, and one Croatian.

Anybody who even contemplates paying ransom is a fool. (1) bullet per terrorist is all they are worth.

Looks like we have identified a target. Give the townspeople of Las Qorey about 24 hours to either facilitate the release of the ships and crews or to evacuate.

A pile or two of smoking rubble ala Hiroshima and Nagasaki would do wonders for changing the hearts and minds of those folks who provide refuge and assistance to these waterborne terrorists.

24 notice to evacuate? Why? And why, at this point, are any ships transiting that area not in armed convoys?

The area would make a nice shipping port, and perhaps endangered wildlife reserve. Would be far better serving as that than the "endangered animal reserve" of its current use.

Because I have such a humanitarian streak and it would be interesting to watch them turn against each other as the cruise missiles whistle in over the horizon.

.........:D if we make it 15 we can watch them scurry like rats.
I hope that nobody mistakes that the nation of Somalia has, through their actions, declared war on the entire international shipping community. These are not "pirates". These are state sponsored terrorists and need to be dealt with accordingly.

    Mad Max

I wouldn't even give them the courtesy of being called a "Nation". I envision a barren land being ruled by warlords akin to a bad "Mad Max" movie. Wait, no, "WaterWorld" only without the water. I don't know . . .
