    Yeah you are right....hand sanding is the best...and you are getting into scotchbrite pads..that is some serious varnishing.
    If you got the time and you do, it's part of your job, by all means that is the way to do it.
    I'm always limited with time, my varnish jobs have to be done over a two day weekend...I feel the need for speed and an orbital sander. BUT my current boat all varnish is rounded so I have to hand sand all the trim and toe rails.

    I happily have all my varnish inside. I've been tempted to varnish a stray piece of teak and leave it in the cockpit sun just to remind myself why I don't have any outside teak after maintaining an Egg for 13 years. Mine was all hand sanding. but just enough to abraid for a fresh coat or two.

    3M makes a variety of good foam sanding pads that work good for hand sanding different shapes wet or dry.
