Having built reputable expertise in the construction of sailing super yachts, the Jongert yard now also employs its capacities in building motor yachts. Two semi displacement yachts by design of Guido de Groot have been commissioned following the introduction of a preliminary design at the Monaco Yacht Show, last year. The 3800MY is the first vessel being built in the new series of Jongert motor yachts.

Exterior and interior styling of the yacht is by Guido de Groot Design. This internationally famed designer has joined in close co-operation with Jongert yard, Hugo van Wieringen of Azure Naval Architects and the client. Initially, De Groot composed a design for a 29 meter motor yacht featuring specific style elements of the Jongert sailing yachts. This design appealed to the client, as he has been sailing Jongert yachts for many years. While looking for a motor yacht, it was a very pleasant surprise to see one offered with all the distinctive Jongert qualities. Consultations into the client's wishes led to the considerably enlarged design of the 38 meter yacht.

Capable of speeds up to 28 knots and a cruising speed of 25 knots, the 3800MY accommodates eight guests and six crew. She is built compliant to RINA and MCA standards. Special technical features on this yacht are the advanced Jongert integrated touch screen monitoring system and the central hydraulics system. Hydraulic power, generated by the main engines, drives the anchor winch, bow thruster and stern thruster, capstans for berthing lines, the tender crane, the gangway and the zero speed stabilizers.
  2. Guido de Groot is excited about this project: “The JONGERT 3800MY is a unique yacht. This design has a raised pilot house, placed quite far forward. This has given the opportunity to generate a lot of space on open air decks. And still, this yacht offers a lot of interior space. Specially for a light displacement and fast yacht, it is very roomy. Not only the owners cabin at the main deck is full beam, the VIP guest suite at the lower deck also stretches out over the whole width of the yacht. To keep the lines of this yacht elegant and sleek, but still provide ample headroom, spaces between ceilings and floors of the distinctive decks are kept as small as possible. The large engine room accommodates the powerful engines needed to propel the yacht to its top speed. Decks are kept clean. A large tender and all desired water toys are stored in the stern garage. No cranes or additional equipment may distract the eye from the yacht's elegant lines.”

At Azure Naval Architects, Hugo van Wieringen is challenged. “With yachts that are designed to reach high speeds, weight is crucial. Calculating the total weight of a hull and all components aboard is an enervating task. Five percent extra weight may cause the yacht to reach top speeds several knots slower than initially intended. Hull shape is of course an other significant criterion for speed.” Van Wieringen benefits from a broad experience with calculations for fast super yachts. “Hull form is also crucial to comfort and stability. The exact right position and shape of spray rails keeps a yacht dry and maximises the lift generated by the spray rail. Tank testing helps finding this optimum. Another result of hydrodynamic testing is finding the best design for the propellers. Optimised propellers generate maximum thrust and cause minimal noise.”
  3. Implementing these complex design characteristics into an easy manageable yacht, ready to sail, expertise at the Jongert yard is applied. Manager design and engineering Leendert Kleijwegt explains the Jongert way of installing all the technical installations. Key to this is a compact and lightweight design. Clever lay-out of all installations on board leaves more room for accommodation areas. “As we do on sailing yachts, the quality of the materials of installations and finish is of the highest level. This lengthens maintenance intervals and reduces maintenance cost. Fitting piping and wiring into small spaces, the lay-out of all these installations needs to be as simple as possible, again to ensure long lasting, low maintenance operation.”

Jongert has built a number of motor yachts before, the last one launched 1998. The 3800MY is the first semi displacement motor yacht, the fastest JONGERT yet. Construction of this yacht with building number 429, will begin in October this year, delivery is planned in May 2009.
