Hi, You expect soot from an old banger like that and a pair of 3516's can produce a lot of that especially the pre Electronic ones.
Here an update for you all, the new Onan is so quite, you almost can’t hear it on the outside (stern). Inside I suppose it depends on isolation, but in mine, the blower of the air conditioner is much louder! So I’m extremely happy buying new, it was a heavy job (even with six strong guys) but the final installation was almost plug and play! An electrician has double checked the complete boat, and the separation of the solar 12/110volt and the generator 110volt, and last Friday we had a go and enjoyed it the whole weekend. After 6 month without air conditioning it was a pleasure to have a cool nap in the updated master bedroom!
I think that the rear exhaust is the safest situation, if it's on the side the boats that may be tied to u could possibly have an issue. I have a swim platform on my boat and it doesn't interfere at all, I have a carbon monoxide detector that I put on the swim platform when we are back there and another by the tackle center, not to mention 3 in the cabin, and have never had the meter register anything at all. I have checked them regularly and they do work and register when I place them directly in front of an open exhaust. Erik which model Onan did you buy? Mine has performed great so far but you never know and I hate down time, my generator gets started before the mains and stays running until I get back to the dock.
Will take some pictures tomorrow, I have the 9KW MDKBL with sound shield, and I was a little surprised that it looked inside quite similar to my old 1992 one!
I am also in the final stages of installing a new Onan 9kw unit with sound shield. I will be intersted to see how much quieter it is.
21 years later, your first Genny had a long and good life. RIP. New stuff does look like old stuff; Updated Kubota engine. Real clean exhaust. Updated OhNo electrical end. Fancy AVR and a block of saftey relays. It is a way better, stronger, cleaner unit. You should be very happy for years to come. Congrats.
Erik, the new genny looks great. It looks like you re-used the original wood mounting, it looks like a simple swap out. I wonder if you will have enough juice if you wanted to go to a bigger a/c in the salon. I am thinking about a new genny; but I want to go to a 24k a/c, I am not sure if the 9.0 can handle all the lights, all a/c and few other things at the same time.
Hi Ruby, yes I re-used the original wood mounting, it was still in very good shape, and removed it, and repainted it. The swap was not too difficult, had to change the fuel line connector and re-route (actually renewed it) the battery cable. Off course we renewed all hoses, clamps etc. I have the original setup with two 16k btu a/c, one for the fwd bedrooms and one in the saloon. Additional I mounted a self contained 16k unit in the storage box between the saloon and the dining area. I tested that one for 8 hours and it worked without any problem.
P46, just curious where you mounted the 3rd ac unit again between the saloon and the table? Would love to see some pictures as I have often thought about where I could put a 3rd unit? How about the intake? Are a 3 on one pump and intake or did you add extras?
Hi Kubu, I only have some old pictures, but I put it in this cabinet. I made an outlet on top and electricity, and water comes thru the engine room. We made an extra inlet, strainer and connected the a/c to the existing outlet. I still need to find a vent cover for the whole air intake section, or I buy a smaller one and make something to measure.
