Alternator full of Salt Hi Guys, Sorry for the long delay. Got caught up in Summer family vacations and work. Anyways I opened up the Alternator and it was completely full of salt. This was damaged when I sprung a saltwater leak from my Starboard engine after cooler and it pretty much ruined it along with my tools, Starboard engine aftercooler clog, etc. I learned my lesson with clamps. If you are replacing all of them when you do your after coolers, don't be lazy and leave out two because you didn't buy enough. Here are some pics of the Alternator. Thanks Again!
Yep, Failed smoke test. No telling what was damaged by water. Start shopping ebay & the web. Get an idea what a used or rebuilt cost, Then take it to a repair shop. You will have an idea what repair vs replace cost could be. I've got an old one in my shed if you're in a bind for time. ,rc
Take it to Greenlight auto electric in Plantation,FL. They're good guys and do good work and will rebuild that alternator no problem....
Needs Lucas P/N 530433 The combination of salt water and electricity is Not Good(tm). Looks well fried on the electronics side. If you go for a rebuild don't forget the bearings.
Bought New Alternator I picked up at replacement alternator from a shop in Miami. Its was $215 plus my core. Installed it and all is good! Thanks for all the advice.
$215. Not bad at all. Don't forget to shop for a spare. You're not in a rush now and ebay can be of help. I picked up a new 21Si / 24V for $50 early this year. Last year, a near new 31SI / 32v for $75. Keep a look out for other 32v stuff. It's out there. I have cases of Anchor 32v screw in bulbs of different wattage from ebay Canada.
