I have a 2003 westerbeke 5.0BCG. it runs ,but no oil press. Runs but turns it self off. Metal in the oil, only has 42 hours. Are these rebuildabble by anyone? Any used ones out there? thanks for your response in advance
They're rebuildable, the question is, is it worth rebuilding or replacing with something new.You probably won't be able to tell until you do the teardown.
Let your pocketbook be your guide...MSRP is about $7500. If you're not a do-it-yourselfer, you'll have to pay someone to unbolt the old one plus install the new one. Being that this is a gasoline-powered set that weighs just a tick over 300 pounds, it shouldn't be too difficult (read: expensive) to find some indie to make it all right again for a lot less than outright replacement. Last thought: call Westerbeke and ask nicely what they think. Might've been a recall or Tech Service Bulletin involved with your model, plus these things come with a 5-year warrantee which would rate a mild WTF? In any case, that's where your cousin Louie will be getting the parts from.
