Interesting article about the owner of Phaedo and the boat, along with a video from the RORC Caribbean 600. Article appeared in Sail magazine online: Phaedo after the ARC: Shifting into Cruising Mode | Sail Magazine (this is the same vessel that raced Maltese Falcon across the Atlantic) http://www.yachtforums.com/forums/134649-post258.html
A few shots from their FB page today...they weren't racing just cruising around in the Pacific. https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.539576069414265.1073741826.190043577700851&type=1
Phaedo's rig failed...catastrophically, no crew were hurt thankfully. https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=10151539358368379&set=vb.190043577700851&type=2&theater https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?v=10151539337218379&set=vb.190043577700851&type=2&theater
Ouch! I was just reading about A trimaran that is going for the TRANSPAC record that broke some rigging last night a few miles east of Phaedo.
No, Phaedo was racing At the time of the dismasting we were sailing under A4 at around 16kts. A satellite phone interview with the team indicated that they thought the top of the mast failed first. “We were running downwind with our large spinnaker up, and I was driving the boat and, yeah, heard it — heard an awful crack, and you know, the whole thing came down,” Phaedo owner Lloyd Thornburg said. The nearly 80-foot carbon fiber mast landed on the starboard deck and pilothouse roof. Without enough spar left to set a jury rig, Phaedo headed back to Los Angeles under power, making about 6 knots with about 250 miles of range in fuel. Because the boat was 500 miles into the race, fuel assistance was needed to complete the trip to shore.
"Phaedo" makes it back to land. https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.567779353260603.1073741835.190043577700851&type=3
