"No one has been able to catch and handle the giant great white shark - mature specimens - and release them alive. No one has ever been able to do this with any sort of repetitiveness or the safety and care needed to make sure the sharks make it," says Fischer, the former host of ESPN's "Offshore Adventures."

This June the National Geographic Channel will begin airing "Expedition Great White," a television series produced by Fischer. In 2007, at the request of Dr. Michael Domeier, one of the world's foremost great white experts, Fischer led a team of scientists and anglers on six expeditions off California that were filmed and produced for the National Geographic Channel. At least seven of the white sharks landed on this trip are the largest fish ever caught and released - the biggest measuring more than 17 feet and weighing more than 4,500 pounds, according to Fischer.

This is some amazing video. However, I don't think you will find the 12 inch diameter circle hook at your local bait shop.

    No Worries

Excellent work they are accomplishing...sharks are being hunted to an extreme, they are top of the oceans food chain and vital to maintain healthy environment...hope people learn from their work.

If in your adventures you find yourself in the ocean with a Shark bearing down on your dive group, just remember you don't need to swim faster than the shark...just faster than the rest of your group. :)

    Hi,

Just take the easy way out- Use your dive knife to stab your nearest buddy and then swim away calmly :D

What you really, really don't want to do is go diving with a large Bavarian 2nd Engineer who has just bought a new underwater camera with flash.

As you gently ease into the mouth of a cave and glance to one side to see a sizable Thresher shark resting

Then WHOOMP ,a bloody great flash goes off over your shoulder into the cave making the shark awfully wide awake.

There is now only one entry/exit hole filled with a skinny whiteboy with his tank stuck on the roof of the entrance.

The shark thinks this is a very good time to bug out of there,

What follows is a maelstrom of scambling, bubbles and a high speed bolt of muscule (and possilbly a squirt of brown water) as the shark shot out.

The trip back to the yacht in the RIB was very quiet.
