Terrapass AMG: As to Dennis Avery and his publishing partner S. Fred Singer their funding comes from the same sources previously identified. See: http://www.sourcewatch.org/index.php?title=Dennis_Avery and http://www.sourcewatch.org/index.php?title=S._Fred_Singer The American Conservative Union Foundation that published Avery's article has a ideological point of view. Their interest here is a religious pilgrimage, not a scientific quest. Hopefully not offending anyone, it's been interesting, but work I must, so I think I'll sit back on this one for a while. John
Speaking of carbon emissions ... does anyone have any experience, anecdotes, sea stories, horror stories, fairy tales, koodoos or other comments about soot filter installations on their boats?
Hi, Didn't you just install a couple of units on a boat? How did they work out? I would re use ETB http://www.etb-bremen.com/ or Hugg http://www.hug-eng.ch/en-particulate-filters.html I would not touch: http://www.cawdellgroup.com/combifilter-dpf.html or any units based on the UNIKAT Combi Filters. The type of Lube Oil used and the amount burnt is a very big item as far as the operation and maintenance of any of these units goes. If you can use clean LS Fuel and a low sulphated ash Lube and do not burn 5 or 10 litres a day you should be good to go with the first two units linked to.
Yes, installed three. They are amazing. I am after other people's stories on how theirs are working and what difference they have made, good or bad. It's for an article. Roger on the low ash lube oil, low sulfur, and good engine maintenance. One of the units I installed went on a generator that was determined by oil analysis to be on the verge of self-destructing. Despite being told in so many words to not run the unit except in a dire emergency until it could be overhauled, the "engineer" decided to ignore that advice and then complained because the filter clogged up within a few hundred hours.
People think driving a prius or hybrid is better for the environment yet there is no study which shows the footprint of the prius vs keeping a older car on the road longer with the total energy expended for both. If for example you have a old Mercedes diesel powered car and it lasts 40 years- how does that stack up to the average prius which will last say 10 years? The prius has three times the amount of energy (building 4 cars instead of one to last the 40 years) used in factory production, engineering, shipping, trucking, recycling and advertising and sales to put faces on the short list. Where is this energy used in the determination of which car is better for the planet? Answer: it's not included now when talking about new cars vs older cars. Until you calculate all the energy used with both choices stating one is better than the other is folly. (not that you were Fish- but your quote was the best place to introduce this)
