If the account is somewhat grounded in truth then the suspect of a failure similar to "Certifiable" comes into play. Very glad the two aboard are safe and relatively unharmed. Also glad I drive a Donzi.

From the Coast Guard report they were 20 miles east of Myrtle Beach:

Coast Guard responds to sinking fishing vessel
    Nov 6th, 2009 by cgnews.

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Two people are safe after the 63-foot sport fishing vessel, Absolutely, they were transporting sank about 20 miles east of Myrtle Beach Friday morning.

Jason Miliys, 34, and Jamie Castantine, 33, were aboard the vessel when they radioed for help. Good Samaritan’s, Craig Hancock, Jeremy Cahoon and Josh White, all from Grantsboro, N.C., aboard the fishing vessel Pacifics were in the vicinity of the sinking vessel when they heard the radio transmission and were able to respond. Once on scene, they safely removed Milius and Castantine from the sinking vessel in good condition.

A Coast Guard 41-foot Utility Boat crew picked up the passengers from the Pacifics and transported them to Coast Guard Station Georgetown.

Milius and Castantine were hired to transport the vessel from Lindenhurst, N.Y., to West Palm Beach, Fla. The vessel left this morning from Wrightsville Beach, N.C. and destined for a stop-over in Hilton Head, S.C.

The cause of the incident is under investigation.

The Coast Guard reminds boaters to have the proper emergency equipment aboard that includes an emergency life raft, life jackets and proper signaling equipment as well as a VHF radio.

I know but everyone keeps asking or speculating where it was that it sunk. I should have just referred them back to post 2.

I guess questioning the lat and long provided was a bit too subtle ...

    Dear Captain Neil,

It has been well established that the sinking was reported to have occurred approximately 20 miles off Myrtle Beach. A recent post referenced a group of bouys without providing an approximate location. The following post provided a lat and long which, as a self described Son of Magellan, you should be able to discover is approximately 60 miles from Myrtle Beach.

I hope this explanation has provided some enlightenment.

    Sarcastically yours,

    Captain Marmot

I've run this exact course countless times. There are two yellow bouys that you pass that are about 20 miles off the SC coast. One is almost due east of Winyah Bay and one is almost due east of Murrells inlet. Every time that I have gone from Cape Fear to Hilton Head you usually don't get within 3 miles of them. I made the trip just a few days prior and spoke with someone who passed just behind the Bert shortly after it sank. That day was clear and the seas were nothing to write home about. If they hit one of these they were really not paying attention.

    Neil,
Do either one of those buoys mark a wreck?

I guess if "two yellows" identifies the same location as "several yellow buoys along with a few reds" why shouldn't a lat and long 60 miles away be close enough. Geez, it's a miracle there aren't more boats lost along that stretch.

I wish I had a dime for every time I checked a route in the GPS and found bouys marked as way points.

Not at all Marmot. My lat/long was way off in my error of not being a little more detailed in chart I was referring to. Silly me.

[As an observation] The general tone of this thread [at times] with all the experts swinging their opinion around on location, theory, prior times taken the trip, speed, can get through the location, can't do it, theoretical route taken, route which should have been taken, buoys, etc. etc. etc. leaves little to be desired. Makes me want to go back to being a silent observer. There is such a wealth of information and experience in this forum, sometimes it gets a little tiring trying to navigate through the piles and piles of "other stuff" (the only polite way I know of saying it).

    Captain and crew are safe.
Attorneys and Insurance companies are arguing.
Owner is stuck without a boat.
And a thousand opinions on who, what, where and why.
All is well in the world!
    Carry on!
