    Hello,

I am an author who has a 74ft luxury yacht in my novel. I was wondering how far offshore is it realistic to anchor? Could you anchor say 15 miles offshore or would that be too deep? It would be 15 miles offshore in the English Channel.

Would the weather be a problem?

Thankyou in advance for helping a complete boating dummy out :)

You could but you d have a rocky night... plus in the middle of the channel chances are you d be run over by a ship anyway. Nice plot if the character is blonde millenial and you want to kill her :)

Seriously we typically anchor in shallow water (less than 50') close to shore and in a location with protction from wind and waves

You have been over there. Any harbors or sounds to compare to? Every time I think of the English Channel, it's rock and cliffs.
Oh yea, always knock off the blond while on the water.

Yes, 15 miles offshore would most likely be to deep.

Give us the plot line? That might help get you realistic answers.

Depending on the plot, there are “unprotected” areas with shallow waters.

For example, in the Bahamas if one takes a straight line from Bimini to Chub Cay the distance is approximately 80 miles and the water is shallow almost all the way.

In the English Channel it would most likely be too deep. But there are many area's like Bahamas Bank or West coast of FL, where 15 miles offshore and the water depth is still relatively shallow.

These same shallow waters will beat you to death if a squall or storm pops up.
Ah, That's when we do in da blonde..
