I’m considering a 2003 Post 50 for our next boat and have noticed several of the Detroit 60 Series motors have either been replaced or overhauled in the early 2000 year models. One 2000 year model had engines “replaced” in 2005 ; the 2003 boat had engines overhauled at 1500 hours. The DD Series 60 has a long track record as a reliable marine engine and I’m posting this to ask if anyone knows if there were installation issues with the DD60’s in the early 2000, Post 50’s ?

    Respectfully,
    Bill S.

I had a set of 200 hour series 60 825HP engines in a 2006 Neptunus, the engines were dated 2003 so they sat somewhere before installation. Anyways, at the 2 year mark and 200 hours FDDA during a routine service caught that one engine had a leaking Garrett aftercooler. They changed both under warranty and luckily the leaking engine didn't need a rebuild or anything. I believe these aftercoolers were a problem child for the series 60 and that was the reason you see replacements during that era. CAT has seen plenty of aftercooler failures in various engines and now mandates replacing them every 6 years, and inspecting them (I think) every 2 years. Prior to the CAT mandate, nobody as far as I know recommended changing aftercoolers.

I sincerely appreciate your reply and input Capt. I’m all too familiar w/ the Cat 3100 series AC issues, but didn’t realize the DD60’s had similar problem
