Looking at a variety of boats as a potential live aboard for myself and my wife in our retirement. Curious about Sea Ray owners thoughts on this. How efficient is the 440 with the diesels at slower speeds? I read a 25 gallon per hour rate posted for at speed running. Any other general thoughts and concerns on this model when looking at them for purchase and this purpose would be greatly appreciated.

You're better off with a 45' Sedan Bridge. It has 1' more beam than the 44' and it gives it more room and stability. I ran a 45' SB with 3126's 425hp I think. It got 1 gpm at 7.5 knots. I ran it all of the way to St. Croix and ran it mostly at that speed. It cruised at 24 knots. It was a stable boat, comfortable layout, and roomy.

Thanks for the info, that is a beautiful boat but is outside our budget if I'm looking at the right one ($300k +). Shopping in the $125k or less range.

No, they're from the same time period and price range (late 90s). Not a newer one. I know of a nice 45' Sedan Bridge that I've dealt with for the last 7 years and it's coming back on the market and should be in your price range, when the owner lists it, I'll send you the link.

Here is one for example, I have nothing to do with this listing, boat or broker

I also like this model as well as other Sea Ray SB models (47/52/58).

Capt J or anyone else familiar with the model, could you please comment on these Cummins engines (6CTA8 or Diamond Series V-drives) and Westerbeke genset in terms or reliability, service, longevity, etc.

Also, how seaworthy is this boat (51'4" LOA, 14'8" Beam, 3'5" Draft, 29,500lbs Weight, 15% Deadrise) compared to its seemingly bigger (52/58) and definitely heavier (over 40,000lb) cousins?

The 45' I ran had Cat 3126's and I took it from Ft. Laud to St. Croix on it's own bottom......It had a 1000 hrs on it when we left.....it had over 2000 hours when it was shipped back and sold 2 years ago.....good running boat...... the owner used it to fish Marlin tournaments!!!!! It did raise fish....I caught about a 150lb Blue on the delivery down..... We got into 10-12's on the Nose when we turned the corner at Viequez......it handled it well.....but thankfully it was only the last 40 miles of the entire trip.....I also run a newish 2007 52' Sedan Bridge and Have delivered same era 58's all over the country...and well Bigger does help the ride......

Cummins and Westerbekes are both relatively reliable and on the cheaper end to maintain......Westerbeke does have their parts that usually need to be changed at 1000 hours....exhaust riser, heat exchanger, and the expansion tank/exh manifold combo......but all in all not too bad on the wallet.....

Reference Cat 3126's and intercool issues. What's the latest state and status with regards to this concern?
