Alinghi got a huge jump off the start, but BMW Oracle was easily reeling them in minute by minute. The deficit of nearly 700m has already been eradicated and BMW Oracle now leads.

The wing-sailed trimaran of BMW Oracle is faster, points higher, and so far seems to be the totally dominant machine!

All the money that went into BMW Oracle hasn't been wasted - from a 660m deficit to nearly a full kilometer lead in about an hour!

    That tri is crazy fast.

I'm happy to see Ernesto getting schooled!

Nice... I've got in on the latop while I'm at work. Not getting much work done today.

BMW dominating the match so far... now ahead of Alinghi by 1.4km and showing no signs of slowing.

Incredible race! Alinghi was supposed to be faster down wind but so far they re doing even worst.

Third time waking up at 5am this week but well worth it

Yeah, even downwind they're 2-3 knots slower.

Imagine doing up to 26 knots in just 8 knots of wind!! Incredible.

BMW Oracle absolutely destroyed Alinghi in this first race. From the early deficit to a win by over 3.5km! Will Alinghi even bother to show up for Race 2? I suppose they can pray for an equipment failure...

15 minutes and 28 seconds later Alinghi finally finishes, after completing their penalty turn.

that really was incredible! I was watching on espn360 I loved seeing how smooth BOR was going thru the water as the umpire boats were getting beat up trying to keep up.
