    Hi,

There are no shortage of repeat problems with the turbo to collector can on 3500's and others that used a multi piece piston ring type sealing arrgt.

I am using 20V 4000 Engines on a project as the Owner wanted the smallest engine space possible and all long life medium speeds were just way too big.

MTU Series 4000 marine engines achieve ABS NVR Certification

As the first engines in its power class, the MTU Series 4000 was recently awarded Naval Vessel Rules (NVR) certification by the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS). The new ABS NVR certification, a requirement for the U.S. Coast Guard’s Fast Response Cutter (FRC) program, was awarded after 1.500 hours of testing of the 20V 4000 M73 that included extensive run times at 110% of the engine’s rated power in a variety of extreme environmental conditions.

Extensive validation testing was also completed in commercial marine and military applications, further demonstrating the versatility and durability of the Series 4000. The latest certification joins the Series 8000 in the engine portfolio of the Rolls-Royce Power Systems company MTU with ABS NVR certification.

“The NVR certification of the Series 4000 engine is another milestone in our long and distinguished history of providing power and propulsion systems to navies around the world,” said Knut Mueller, Vice President Governmental Sales at MTU Friedrichshafen GmbH.

More than 50 years of experience and expertise makes MTU an unparalleled partner for marine defense. The company’s Series 4000 diesel engines offer unrivalled power density in terms of volume-to power and power-to-weight ratio. Engineered for a low operating noise level and designed to offer superior performance, the Series 4000’s advanced technology ensures security at sea with exceptional fuel efficiency and reliability compared to other engines in its class.

The American Bureau of Shipping is a classification society with a mission to promote security of life, property and the natural environment primarily through the development and verification of standards for the design, construction and operational maintenance of marine-related structures and equipment.

MTU Series 8000 gets ABS NVR certification

The MTU Series 8000 was recently awarded Naval Vessel Rules (NVR) certification by the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS).

The new ABS NVR certification, a requirement for the U.S. Navy's Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) and Joint High Speed Vessel (JHSV) programs, was awarded to Tognum subsidiary MTU Friedrichshafen GmbH after 1.500 hours of testing of the 20V 8000 that included extensive run times at 110% of the engine’s rated power in a variety of extreme environmental conditions. Additional validation testing was also completed in a commercial marine application, further demonstrating the versatility of the Series 8000, which joins the 8V 396 in the MTU portfolio of engines with ABS NVR certification.

Since their introduction in 2000, Series 8000 engines have set the benchmark for modern diesel propulsion plants in the 7.200kW to 10.000kW power range. More than 200 engines are sold and 170 units are in operation with a range of international customers, making the Series 8000 the top seller in its performance class.

The Series 8000 can be found in passenger ferries, rescue tugs, large displacement yachts, naval auxiliary vessels, patrol vessels, corvettes, frigates, and multi-purpose ships with stringent naval requirements.

"The Series 8000 has an outstanding reputation in many naval applications around the world. The reputation is unmatched. Now this award ABS NVR confirms that we are top-notch with our Series 8000 engines," said Knut Mueller, Vice President Sales Governmental at MTU Friedrichshafen.

"MTU engines have a long and distinguished history with the United States military," said Bernard Bentgen, director of government sales, Tognum America Inc. "The NVR certification of the Series 8000 engine will help us strengthen our relationship with the U.S. Navy and U.S. Coast Guard, as we continue to work to provide our naval defense customers with the best propulsion technology available."

The American Bureau of Shipping is a classification society, with a mission to promote the security of life, property and the natural environment, primarily through the development and verification of standards for the design, construction and operational maintenance of marine-related structures and equipment.

GE/MTU Extend Marine System Supplier Agreement

    Hi, K1W1!
What You wrote is absolutely true...
I am also sure You have heard for some projects that jointly involved GE and MTU...

GE Marine reports that it provided MTU Friedrichshafen, Germany, with one LM2500 gas turbine for the German Navy’s third Baden-Württemberg-class (F125) frigate.

“We are pleased to also announce that GE recently extended its Marine System Supplier agreement with MTU, a long-standing relationship that has been in place between the two companies since the early 1970s,” said Brien Bolsinger, GE Marine general manager.

Under the MSS agreement, MTU buys GE Marine LM gas turbines and installs them into MTU packages for integration into complete propulsion systems. “In fact, MTU has provided GE LM gas turbine packages for a variety of military and commercial marine applications, most recently to power the United States Coast Guard’s Bertholf-class cutters, and a newbuild high-speed yacht. GE LM2500s also power the German Navy’s Bremen- (F122), Brandenburg- (F123) and Sachsen-class (F124) frigates,” Bolsinger added.

For the F125 frigate project, one LM2500 gas turbine, two electric motors and four diesel generator-sets will be supplied in combined diesel-electric and gas turbine (CODLAG) propulsion arrangement.

The LM2500 gas turbine was manufactured at GE’s Evendale, Ohio, facility and was delivered to MTU’s Friedrichshafen facility in March 2013 for placement into the CODLAG propulsion module. The ship is expected to be commissioned by the German Navy in 2016.

Was there a reason to turn this thread into an MTU promotion and commercial? I'm a fan of MTU's but aren't you getting a bit carried away? Do you work for them?

No, I do not work for MTU. I am an engineer, working in power heating plant (most of the time with steam and gas (GE) turbines), in Zagreb, Croatia, far away from MTU :)
I was, also, writing, in some other threads, about some engines produced by the other manufacturers. And I don´t work for them either. :)

    Nice regards

    Geeez,
So other than personal thoughts, rationale, been there/done that and hands on service history or experience, We have turned on to a multi post, long winded MTU advertisement by some person who does not work on them or have a real life clue.
If I wanted another hot air/long winded blow J advertisement, I would of turned the F$^^& TV back on, or gone back to the income oriented forum.

    DD 16v149s

As far as I am aware, the 16v149s were not the biggest 149s they made. I remember having seen some DD 20V149s powering generators. They must have been really hard work for the dynos. And old mechanic told me once, the would run flawless on almost anything that burns, including old butter and margarine :D, as long as they get enough of it.

    Excellent picture !!

One of the unique features of the 149 engine is its square bore design; 5¾ -inch bore x 5¾ -inch stroke.
As far as I can remember, the 20V configuration was mainly designed for haul trucks. It has 3 engine blocks and 3 crankshafts bolted together - 6V block on either end of a special 8V block with 6 turbos, 3 blowers and intercoolers.
