    The steering position is aft with passengers in front, and it works very well. This is first time I see somebody standing up in full speed, it is a little windy in 40 knots...

    The radar is above your head, but I doubt anyone would stand up for more than a few minutes when using the radar so there shouldn´t be any harm. I think it is worse to visit a boat show...

    Just in time for the Scandinavian Boatshow in Stockholm, our new 34-footer was launched. We started this project seven months ago which is a rather short time for a new model, but the first sea trial across the Baltic was successful. The top speed was 38-39 knots with a Volvo Penta D6 370 hp and she was using around 1,6 l/nm at 30 knots.

    Congratulations Lars! She looks really good afloat.

    Please can I ask you about your choice of engine manufacturer?

    On the D34 the Volvo Penta would seem to be a natural choice for what I have always known as an ‘inboard/outboard’. But would you choose a Volvo over one of the other manufacturers for a vessel that is 30 meters or more? I guess I am asking if you favour Volvo because they are Swedish, or do you believe they are the best on the market? :)

    Thanks, yes on smaller boats and especially on our local markets, Volvo Penta is the brand in demand. You know, on production boats, we would like to make sales easy and not trying to sell an engine as well.

    The new IPS II with bigger engines will be our first choice on the 54', but if you are saying 100 feet and high speed, I am not sure. I have used MAN and MTU before and I would go for Cats too, but it all depends on what boat it is, how fast it must be and where it is sold. On captained boats there also use to be personal favoured brands on propulsion and gensets.

    You said pretty much what I thought you would say - although I was surprised that a captain could have such a strong influence over the choice of engine. I can understand captains and engineers being invited to express a preference - but they move on from boat to boat and their replacements may end up working with something they would not normally use. I suppose one could liken it to James Bond saying he wants a Mercedes engine in the Aston Martin! I had thought that, although the final choice of power plant lies with whoever has commissioned the boat, it would be the designer and builder who would chose what was right for that particular vessel. Thank you – I’ve learned something new today.

    Thank you, I have to wait some time before I can show you the complete boat, but here is the present profile in another colour scheme. More on this boat will come in February in connection with the Stockholm Boatshow. The real thing is planned for the 2010 season.

    Lars, is it possible that one of your boats was on the water in Marstrand for the finish of the Galway to Marstrand leg of the Volvo Ocean Race? While watching the coverage of the leg on TV this evening I saw a vessel for a very brief second (and unfortunately only from the stern quarter) that looks like it could have been one of yours. It appeared to be an official boat marking the finish line. Is that shape very popular in that area?

    I didn´t watch this myself, but our West Coast dealer is located in Marstrand and have a 29´and the new 34-footer to show, so it was probably one of those you saw. When the race arrived in Stockholm I saw many of our boats following the finish and the restart for St Petersburg. Here we have over 100 boats already...

    Rumours tells me that you have been travelling for a few days and seatrialled the coming delta 54 ?

    OK Speedy, this thread has been quiet for some time now, partly because we were waiting for the first D54 hull to be launched and tested.

    Since we were going straight from drawings to full scale sea trials it was a very exciting day when the builders, Volvo Penta representatives and us behind the design saw it rolling out.

    This first hull had a complete D29 fitted inside to give comfort and weather protection for the test crew, the Baltic is a dull place this time of the year...

    We had an idea that twin IPS/600 could give acceptable performance, eventhough we had installed triple IPS in this hull, so we started with just two engines running. This was not very successful, but we got about 32 knots. This can most likely be improved with just a clean twin installation.

    When we later adjusted the ballast trim and was running all three engines, the performance was a lot better. No big hump to get on plane and almost 42 knots speed, with very little wake.

    So with the hull in place, we can now focus on building the deck and interior. We hope to have the first complete boat in about six months.

    but in that you see how big that boat really is...

    It does indeed. In case people aren't aware. The 54 foot hull being tested is a bare hull with engines fitted. The cabin you see is actually a separate 29 foot boat sitting inside the bigger hull providing the test crew with some protection from the elements and controls etc. They must have set some sort of record as having the largest lifeboat as a proportion of the primary vessels size i.e. a 54 footer with a 29 foot lifeboat.

    Looking at the center picture, I am surprised that the D29 is so off center in the D54's hull. That must affect the balance of the larger boat.
