Well the time has come to paint our 50 Post. The hull is overall in good shape but is starting to show its age and the gelcoat is dulling. I compounded and waxed the boat last year but it really needed a good wet sand. Based on the cost of wet sanding every few years and the ease of maintaining a painted hull, we decided to get on a schedule for this winter. We spent a lot of time looking at paints as our friends have a 48 Ocean painted in AwlCraft “Light Blue” which is beautiful. We decided we wanted a touch more color and are plannin going to with AwlCraft 2000 “Whaler Blue” with several coats of clear on top done at New England Boatworks. We were also planning on painting the boot stripe so it will be more resistant to wear over it’s life. Anyone have any thoughts on painting versus not painting the boot stripe? For the boot stripe, it would likely be a dark blue (flag blue) or black. The sanding should be started later this week, donut is like Christmas all over again!
Isn't there a program somewhere that lets you take a photo then superimpose different colors and options so you can see what it will look like?
I would also paint the boot stripe! Since you're investing a hefty paint bill, why wouldn't you have the boot painted too?
I've used them for commercial buildings. Problem is what you see on one screen may not be accurate or the same seen on another screen. In one case I had a paint manufacturer, photo an apartment building and sent to me along with their paint colors, their program, and codes. It was only good for a basic general color concept after which I had some samples made up to apply in a few areas. Most recently working on painting a retail center where the city mandates use of their colors they display on city web site. If my recollection is correct they have a warning about the accuracy due to viewing on various computer screens and the only true way is make up samples based on the posted paint codes and apply in areas.
I have a 1996 50’ Post that was painted light grey with a royal Blue boot stripe back in 2013 with Awlcraft 2000. I am very happy with it. I have the entire boat waxed once a year and it has stood up well. I use the boat 12 months a year. I am in Gloucester Ma from June till End of October and Stuart Fl from mid November till end of May
