First time doing an oil change in my Yanmar 6CXM-GTE2. My last boat had flat tappet cam, so I used a Zinc additive to protect the cam. Do I use it in these engines? Are they roller cams? Thanks in advance!
What does the factory say? I also am not a fan of snake oil added to engines outside of factory instructions. #1 read, Will it void your warranty? This could be a good sign not to ad it ever.
I did extensive research on the zinc content 2 years ago and came to the same conclusion Yanmar did - no additives, current Diesel oils from Shell and Delo have 1500ppm plus zinc in each. I didn't do this for Tres Leos with her 6LP Yanmars, I did it for Southern Exposure with her Crusader 7.4L BBCs. As a result, I run Rotella T1 SAE 30 or 40 if I can find it in the gas burners because the zinc content is about as high as you can get without using break in additives.
Cool, thank you. Was just worried as I know gas flat lifters will wipe out the cam without zinc. I Jace a few antique cars and always add it.
I got the 6LP-STE and using Shell Rotella, previous owner used Delco, either way, good running engine and good oil analyze results. All good without no zinc additives.
NAPA = Valvoline and yes, it had 1100+ ppm zinc at last check. This is from my 2002 manuals. Based on current standards we should be using CH-4 or CI-4 rated oils. https://www.api.org/~/media/files/c...iesel/publications/mom_guide_english_2013.pdf
