Good day, I have a kohler generator 6.5 that is leaking excessive oil. Am looking for seal part numbers that I should order before I take it apart. Any help would be appreciated! Shari
WHERE is it leaking from and what seals do you need? Model and serial number would help. Emailing a Kohler dealer would be your best bet.
Hi thanks for the comments, Model # 6.5ESZ S/N 483107 SPEC 125253 Oil seems to be coming from underneath the oil pump, near the engine/stator flange? Has anyone seen this before and is it an easy fix? Thanks in advance.
I rebuilt a could 15kw gas units this winter with the 1.6L vortex engine and only after putting the first together realized it had a leaking seal where shaft enters gen unit. That was a real pain to tear back down.
Always test run small motors on a bench, before you install them! Saves a lot of hassle later. Should put assembly lube on that area of the crankshaft for lubrication during startup.
I'm not a small gas person. I just happen to be around somebody else's bench. Have you checked the oil filter seal/ring or changed oil filters? After that, the only external place oil would leak from under pressure would be the oil pump cover with a failed gasket. I'm still leaning towards a bad oil filter seal. I do not recall the rear oil seal or the head galleries but knowing Kawasaki, there are not many places for oil to leak from.
Good Morning, have ordered the seals and gasket for the oil pump and a new filter, that will be the first thing I try! Thanks for everyone's help!
Even if he doesn't degrease the outside, I'd put die in the oil, run it for a couple of hours and then look for the dyed oil using a UV light. Easy peasy. Now you really know what your dealing with.
On many Pac-Rim small engines, the oil pump is mounted outside the block. Some like the old Mopar blocks, other flush on the cast iron. The small engine idea was to keep the engine height down, small sump, oil pump to the side. It the case of this engine, they even leaned/slanted the engine over near like a pancake Detroit. Plumbing was cast into the block also, reducing extra or repetitive parts.
Thanks. I learned something. although on a generator height is not that critical... except maybe very small units on small Boats
