So while doing some winter work and wrapping up the A1 service, it looks like my stbd block heater is toast as it keeps popping the breaker. I went through my MAN repair manuals and there is nothing listed for the engine block heater. It looks like there is a plug that ties into the coolant system right before the oil cooler and then another at the front the exhaust manifold. Has anyone replaced their block heater and if so, do you know the part number and where to source it from? It seems like a very simple system but I haven't dug too deep into yet as I have had a 1000 other items I am trying to wrap up (the boat has become my social distancing home office for now). It looks like I just need to drain the coolant system, and swap in a new unit, but are there any other things I am missing in troubleshooting the problem?

Thank you in advance for any help or advice!

    Send a picture.
If it'd the normal heater element (HotStart), You screw it out of a cold engine and screw in the new element. Minimal coolant loss.
Lets find the operating voltage (115 or 230Vac) and a model number on the bake-lite side of the heater.

Try Bayside diesel in Mystic. Over the years I have replaced 2 or 3 units. It's a submersion unit as you have identified with the U shaped heating coil located on the left hand lower side of the block facing forward. The screw in at the top front of the freshwater supply at the heat exchanger is the thermostat. These are german engines and I think its all metric

Simple change. Turn off the 110 power though. I believe they have two ranges 110 degrees and 90 degrees determined by wattage? Ask Bayside.

Yeah I am planning to talk to Bayside, just didn’t know if they are closed with the Shelter in Place order in CT. Figured it was worth a shot to see if anyone had done this job before. I will grab some pictures tomorrow.

They do a fair amount of shipping - like to me - so I would expect they are up and running?? But dunno. Ask for Stephen or Mike.

talked to Steve this morning. He had come in to shut the place down as they are not going to have anyone onsite or working until the Shelter In Place order is over. They have drop shipped parts to me before but it doesn’t sound like they are able to do anything during this time. Great service though as he called me first thing this morning to give me an update of what was going on.

Sorry for not being able to help, but if you will eventually find out what the part #, I'd appreciate if you could post it here.
Thanks in advance and good luck with the fix.

At least the warm weather is due.... Have you opened the thermostat to be sure the contacts are clean - worth a try I guess. Also put a continuity meter on the heating coil to determine if its intact and not corrioded. I don't know what that does to help the situation....but it does give you info.

I still have my original thermostats.
For some reason, the only heater failures I ever had was the stb engine.
The original on port, Its third on the starboard after 15 years , 12V17TIs.
I only use them when It's freezing out side. Whole boat stays warm for days after.

That is the silver lining in all of this. Well I am back to my new home office on the boat tomorrow and will check this out. If only I could get a good Wi-Fi signal in the engine room, then I could really telecommute.

So the thermostat is on the left side of the engine facing forward at the front where the coolant runs into the exhaust manifold I believe. Is the port by the oil cooler just a sensor?

Send me a pic of the oil cooler? Our set ups may be different. I have the heating element in the side of the engine, by the oil sensor, and a thermostat near the heat exchanger on the front of the engine.

No Wi Fi allowed in the engine room! You're entitled to some solace….on Soulstice.

    Great words to hide by.
I also enjoy leaving my phone on deck and talking to Da Girls..
They do miss an occasional pat on the gear and fondle of the covers. Da girls do get us home from Aqua Space and need some good vibes feedback.
Took Josie some time to understand that discussions with the machinery is required.
17 years ago, I had to re-introduce them to English with some modern foul language involved. They understood and have been happy since (spoiled little bitches)...

Great Point As that is the whole point of the boat after all...

I will keep it to music only in the engine room, hopefully I can find something the German girls like
