I can only find this one poor image of the MY Endymion. She was 138' long LOA and belonged originally to Sir Herbert Samuelson who was the first post WWI governor of British Palestine among other things. By 1939 she belonged to Dutch interests and was named Gaviota. It's likely she was requisitioned by the Axis in WWII and probably was sunk by the Allies. I would appreciate any info on this vessel and would love a good picture or two posted if any exist. Endymion among others.PNG

We have an album of many photos of her in the 40s I think she ended up in S America owned by Arturo Lopez as Gaviota (he had several Gaviotas)

Referring back to the Brightlingsea photo at the top of this thread, I have never seen a photo of the "SY Karen" which is to the right of Endymion. She was built in 1923 by Camper & Nicholson and looks very similar. She is nowhere to be found in the 1939 Lloyd's Register Of Yachts. She is listed in the 1931 Lloyd's. I am thinking she must have met an early demise. If anyone knows anything of the fate of "Karen" I would be most appreciative to know. By the way, she had oil engines and was not a steam yacht.
  9. This was my great grandfathers yacht - I have a good picture of her

Rupert, any chance you could take some I-phone shots of the pictures in the album? You could text them to me possibly.

Resurrecting this thread...just came across it while browsing!

My Grandfather, Captain Joe Carter was the skipper of 'Endymion' under the ownership of Sir Herbert. Unfortunately the old boy passed away about 5 months before my birth, so sadly, the only real knowledge I have of his time on her was secondhand from my father.

I am fairly certain that I have some better photo's of her somewhere in the collection of memorabilia I have at home, if they are of interest I will try and dig them out.

Captain Joe, after he left service with Sir Herbert took up the role of skipper on the SY 'Medea'. Again, I am pretty certain that I have some photo's of her in my collection and if they are of interest I will dig them out and post here.

It probably won't be until after the weekend, but I will see what I can find!

I also have a bit of memorabilia in my study from Endymion...sadly no certificate of provenance other than the say so of my late Father.

When ships Captains left the service of the owners, they were often given something from the vessel as a thank you for time served. Sir Herbert thought very highly of Captain Joe and his leaving gift was the ships Barograph and a cabin settee from the Captains cabin.

Again if pictures of these items are of interest, I am more than happy to provide.

Hi...sorry, I don't use Facebook...I think it is far too invasive. Happy to post here, but that is it I am afraid!
