The hull is really taking shape , looks awesome !!

Whenever on the dimensions no rush. I'm just getting started on glassing the new floors. Lots of prep, I added some bulkheads for more stiffness and running new 3" vent tubing, plus all new wiring.

Hello guys I was following the thread and wanted to chime in. I recently finished one of these vessels top to bottom -liner out and everything. The project almost ruined me! Anyway it was all worth it. Glad to see more of these finding brave souls to save them.

    Chris Craft Dory restoration

Hey guys, I too am in the middle of a restoration of one of these beauties!! I was fortunate enough to find one with all the pieces, only she sat for several years neglected. She was never painted or messed with. I had to cut up decks, remove soaked foam, refoamed, reglassed decks, yanked out engine bed stringers and filled with SeaCast. Finishing up glass work and hope to have painted by end of summer. I will post some pics when I get a chance. These boats are amazing!!!

    Thanks Ed,

Lets put it this way - I could have picked a better starting point than I did! We ended up lifting the liner out and engineering a lateral stringer/rib system into the boat and eliminated all wood and foam. The main stringers now run through 85% of the hull and are epoxy slurry filled FRP beams bonded to the hull. Also we tied in 3/8" stainless steel plates that bolted into the stringers for the tower and leaning post to fasten to.

Long story short, it took about 3 years start to finish. Our project is a 1975 edition. We rebuilt the original engine (and slightly enhanced it ;) to the tune of 325hp) She runs like a champ!

It's alot of work, The main stringers in mine are ok, but with the floors cut out I added bulkheads about every 30" for stiffness. What kind of paint did you use inside and out, right now leaning to Awlgrip 545 primer and top coat. As far as engine hopefully by the winter months going all new 315hp Crusader or Mercruiser MPI/ freshwater cooled.

    Ironman.....

Thanks for the drawings and measurements. That will work, I'm going to pre-assemble it using 3/4 foam sheets as core than glass. Using the foam makes it pretty easy to get the radius corners.

    Thanks

    Ed,

We used the new Imron MS600 primer/paint system and I am thrilled. Not many guys have used it so I'm not sure I can recommend it from a labor standpoint but the finish is exceptional.

Ed we sprayed but I will check to see if there were brushing instructions. It was all prep and lots of it. I will reiterate that the labor was intense with the Imron system. Not sure I would repeat. You can probably get a great finish with the awlgrip without the hassle. Will you be doing the paint yourself and if so are you a skilled painter, if not I would avoid the Imron. Ours was professionally prepped and sprayed by a true veteran. And he was exhausted at the end! If you have the patience and time and budget I would still opt for the awlgrip as there are more places out there that can handle it over Imron for both the initial job and future touch up and or repair. Have I convinced you not to use Imron yet?!

    emron

    Hi Al,

I just wanted to get the facts, it has to be sprayed. There are so many choices today, I understand even Petit has a new 2part topside paint, equal to Awlgrip and Perfection. Again, I dont see me getting to painting until next spring, hoping to get maybe a coat or two of primer before fall. still alot of prep and like you said prep is everything!! If your going to do it ,do it right.

Those long compartment hatches you have port and starboard sides of floor what size are they, and is there a inside compartment to them, Love to put them in mine.

Peope have been spraying Awlgrip for decades now. They know it, they're familiar with it, you can buy it anywhere in the country, and it lasts and holds up very well if you simply wash it with Awlwash. Why try anything else. I would go with it if I was having my own boat painted. Imron would be a second choice as I've seen that hold up a very long time as well.
