I’ve got a 1998 SeaRay 480 SedanBridge with Detroit Diesel 6v92 engines. This engine is the higher horsepower with 15:1 compression pistons. I’m looking for a piston crown assembly. Apparently MTU is back ordered with no delivery date listed. The part number is: 23517665 Any ideas? Salvage yards with engines being parted out? OEM? Right now I have a very expensive paperweight unless we can find that piston. TIA
Your going to need a liner also. They come in complete matched kits. Seems MTU/DD is having some quality issues. Contact McBee for a good after market set. https://interstate-mcbee.com/products/
Interstate Mcbee is a good source but unless that is an extremely low hour engine I wouldn't replace just one piston/ liner , I would replace them all. Just out of curiosity, is in 3 left?
Thanks for the lead. McBee doesn’t make this part either. Is there a list of engine bone yards that carry DD?
Someone else made pistons for DD's........I cannot remember who it was. You can most likely get JE to make you a set of pistons..........but one of the big manufacturers used to make pistons for DD's.......can't think of the name.
That’s the worst part, the liners were available so we bought (6) new liners. The plan was to reuse the piston/crowns but (1) was not usable. So they sell the liners but not the piston crowns. Go figure.
Are you ordering parts by engine serial number? Is this the DDEC 6V92TIA? What does Detroit recommend?
The engine serial number is: 06VF218355 The part number from MTU is: 23517665 Piston 1 3/4 It’s a 15:1 compression. The basic piston for the 6V92 is 1 1/2 and 17:1 compression, but the one we need is listed above. Thank you!
The 15:1 piston was used on the 6V92 TIA. These have been recently been rebuilt by members on YF. Are you dealing with a real Detroit Shop?
With liners yes, a DDC part number no. This was going back about 10-15 years ago, so memory eludes me......but one of the big piston manufacturers was making cylinder kits for DD's and sold aftermarket. Someone like Manley or Keith Black or someone. Can't remember who it was and haven't dealt with a DD rebuild since 2008.
Here's 15:1 pistons and rings. I don't know how good they are, but..... LCK24337 | Detroit Diesel Piston Kit | 92 Series (dieselpartsdirect.com)
Have you tried Diesel Pro here in Miami? They re pretty big and do a lot of export. https://dieselpro.com/ As to MTU quality control, out of the 16 new cylinder heads my mechanic received and inspected before bringing to the boat, one had a bad valve retainer… brand new out of Germany.
Do you know who rebuilds them? That could be an option. We have called every major supplier that deals with Detroit and have spoken to MTU directly; this part has been on back order for over a year with no future production currently planned. What’s weird is they have the liners. ::sigh:: No piston : no worky We are looking for someone who can rebuild this one, or maybe one out of a salvaged engine.
Yes, they have had them on back order for over a year. No shipping date for the future. They told me they could put together a kit of entirely different cylinders and pistons that would work on that motor, but I would have to sign a release of liability before they would sell it to me.
Our local shop doesn't have any and has no idea when one will be available. He's checking with some other folks now but it doesn't sound promising. This is bad for lots of us, I am planning to rebuild my port engine this winter so I'm going to be looking for parts myself.
