Figured I would ask before starting to make holes looking for the water tank. Really looking for the sender that’s not working.

Tried following hose from fill. Inlet hose from the water pump beneath the galley seems to becoming from somewhere forward of the galley, unless it makes a u turn somewhere.

    Appreciate any advice. Thanks

No manual, no documentation on board? Deck fillers are usually close to the tanks

No manual for the boat itself. Wish I had one.

On my Ocean 44, it is located under the forward ER bulkhead and between the port and starboard inboard stringers. the Sender is visible from the ER. I had issues with my water tank sender indication but it was due to the gauge, replaced the gauge and all is good.

The waste tank is just forward of the water tank and there is a hatch under the carpet in the passageway for access. I would guess yours in similar but the hatch has been covered up by replacement flooring covering.

    • If your tank emptying does not cause your boat to list, your tank is centerline.
    • Generally speaking fuel tanks are close to the engine, and water tanks are forward.
    • As was stated, your fill location is typically close to the tank
    • Your water tank vent is also be in the ballpark of the tank
    • On most smaller vessels you can actually hear the water entering the tank on a very quiet boat
    • If for some reason you cannot trace the fill hose to the tank location, see if you can trace it from the water pump

On the 43' it is accessed via the lazarett hatch in the salon. Their is a small access panel in the bottom of the laz to access a cleanout and the sender.

I have a 42 Ocean , it's the same as Capt Fred's 44... You just got to follow the water pump inlet hose as you were doing ...a bright flash light and open every hatch and access panel you can going forward as you stated and you will find your tank , or just trace the sender wire from the gauge or on off switch to the tank . it's fiberglass and I'm sure it's between the stringers.

On my 45 it's under the companionway stairs and accessed through a hatch located under the mattress in the guest stateroom.

Found it! We are replacing the carpet next week, pulled it up and found the water tank immediately forward of the forward bilge access in the master.

There is also an access panel at the foot of the v-berth. Good to know if one ever needed to access pipes at the front of the water tank or rerun the sanitation pipes to the vacuflush under the v-berth.

I would need to enlarge the 1’ by 1’ opening to actually do any work.

I pulled the sender. Can’t figure out how it works or find anything like it on-line. Please help me identify it or recommend a reliable replacement. The access will be under the nice new carpet. Thank you for your help.

Float assembly is missing. Floating around in the tank still.
Yep, looks like a screw came loose.
If I remember, it's a white plastic float, wire rod as long as that sender is deep and the hinge / gear assembly.
Pump some water out and go fishing with a coat hanger wire. in the mean time, nuts, washers, screws and float assembly are rattling around in your tank.

As the float rises and falls, pivoting at the bottom, gear drive would rotate the shaft. The sensor at the top would give the level value to the gauge.

This is usually a good sender. Fix it if you can.

drain water tank with pump, use a shopvac in the tank...… better than my Ocean 63' water tank experience...… owner owned the boat since it was a year old, boat was a 1987......then in the late 2000's, any faucet in the boat would have great pressure for the first 5 seconds then go to a coffee pot trickle......thought it was the water pump, went there and the hose was completely collapsed, replaced the hose, same issue.....turns out the bung that they drilled to put the pick up in dropped into the tank.....after like 15 years it got stuck in the bottom of the pickup and the pump was drawing from the drill hole in the center of it.

    Good advice.

Though my only access to the inside of the tank right now is the sender hole.

    Yep

The float is on the water dragging the wire rod. You should be able to snag it.
Mini flash light and a mechanics part grabber may help get the screws if not in the pickup yet.

If a plastic tank, the pickup is just off the bottom of the tank. Double check this. The screws may not be an issue then.

Just changed my old VDO float type sensor in July; went with a Wema SSS/SSL water level sensor. Easy to do and works like a champ. Just need to test your old sensor with an OHM meter to see if it is American or European Standard so it will work with your gauge. To replace your old sensor with the same thing, you looking at $250. The Wema sensor was about $75. Go to Wemausa.com in Davie, FL
