    Who does Cummins recommend?
A good relationship and record with the Cummins shop could save some surprises and Uh-Oh's.
A correct install offers more protection for your investment and keeps the warrantys more intact.

Please keep YF up on your thoughts and progress.
I have often day-dreamed about the same job on out Bert.

Ralph makes a good point. Cummins will visit and "sign off" on the re-power after completion. They may have a recommendation.

Isn't YF Member Pascal doing something very similar to this right now?

Yeah using 450hp C series. They won't be installed for another 2 or 3 months though. I ordered them from Mavex in Miami, they re a cummins reman dealer and have done quite a few repower. Haven't deceided on the yard yeae, they usually use a yard on the river, forgot which one.

Pascal, are you putting the Cummins 450 in a 51 Bertram? Would be interested in your thoughts and expectations.

I repowered a 31 Bertram with the 6bta 220's and an Island hopper with the 370B. Also repowered a 38 Bertram W Cat 3208Ta 375's and they are good, but I think for the 50 I really want to go back to Cummins. I here nothing but good things of the QSM and assume 660 hp with the weight loss will still give me a 20 knot cruise at an economical fuel Plus thousands of hours of enjoyment with out the fear of rebuild costs-Hoping the 50 Bert will be my last project boat.

Any of this work in S FL with new engines?
Pascal has a Hat, not a Bert.

I re-powered the 31 in California, the Cummins 370B in Marathon- not a great experience!, and had a good experience with the 38 Bert (Cat 3208TA) in Ft. Lauderdale from an independent who is most likely retired- that was back in 2002.

Did you ever repower your 50 Bertram? I am going to do a repower in September using the QSM11 at 715 hp. Wondering how you like your engines and what your consumption and performance figures are. Any information you could share would be great. Thanks.

I've never seen it an issue......the QSM 11's I deal with have wet turbo's...….and then the raw water dumps into the riser maybe 8" down past the turbo......I haven't seen any engine room heat issues and they're mounted pretty close to the ceiling in a 48' Formula. They do resonate a TON under 700 rpms...….like most twin engine cummins installations do.

There has been a lot of discussion on dry exhaust manifolds and dry turbo's on the higher hp recreational ratings for the QSM-11 on other forums. Something a buyer should be aware of: https://www.sbmar.com/articles/propping-cummins-qsm11-to-prevent-exhaust-leaks/

Nagging exhaust leaks leading to other maintenance issues and reduced parts life.

A wet Exhaust Elbow after the Turbo does not equal a wet (water-cooled) turbo. Check and see if it has an insulated wrap around the Turbo - then it is dry and not water-cooled.

The turbo's on the QSM 11's I deal with the turbos are not dry, they're painted white and have no wrap or any kind of insulation around them. I believe they're 800 HP. The Cummins tag on the motor states useful lifespan: 10 years/1000 hours. I thought that was rather strange.

The 48 Formula came with 660hp QSM-11's. Cummins does not have an 800hp rating for the QSM-11.

Here is a pic of for reference:

I’m (obviously) a newbie and trying to get an idea of costs for repowers in general. Been reading multiple threads and lots of talk about repowers but no $$$. Is it poor etiquette to ask, or just about the old addage....if you have to ask you probably can’t afford it......

    Any advice is appreciated.

You're right I just looked at pictures of the 48' Formula I deal with. It's 661HP on the date plate. I specifically like the "Useful Life: 10 years/1000 hours" stamped right on the data plate.

I am just wrapping up the repower of my 42 Egg Harbor with new QSC 600's, not reman's. New was almost cheaper after the incentives. All in it's going to set me back about $150K. I had to replace the gears and the shafts, and a fair amount of parts had to be made/bought (motor mounts, controls, etc.).
