Finished up the new windlass cleat yesterday while working on the boat. The chain to 8 plait connection is almost done as well so I am planning to put the ground tackle on the boat today. Going to measure pulpit before and after and see what effect 200lbs has on static trim with 3/4 fuel and water.

200lbs won't be noticeable on your 40' Cabo. I've run them with 300 lbs of hi test chain before and everything was fine.

After having saddle tanks in the Ocean SS I do notice fuel levels much more now with the traditional fuel tank location in the Cabo. I especially noticed the trim sensitivity of the 43 when I was shopping for a Cabo. That was one of a number of factors that made me decide to go with the 40. The hull seems to handle weight distribution much better.

Well there's also a big difference in ride characteristics between the old hull designer of the 43' and the Michael Peters hull on the 40'.

Was pleasantly surprised today after adding the chain, rode, and anchor to the boat. Pulpit height off the water only changed by 1.25 inches. Went from 64 to 62.75 inches off the water to bottom of pulpit.

Nice pics! the setup looks good. With that cleat there it is also pretty easy now to put a safety line to the chain for when running. Have heard of too many horror stories of windlasses disengaging and captains seeing the anchor dragging behind at high speed, or worse ending up in one of the wheels

Take extra caution to make sure your splice from the 8 Plait to the chain is correct. I bought a complete Rode from Maxwell only to watch the splice unravel in front of my eyes and 100' of chain and a 75# anchor gone! Maxwell took care of it but it cut a fishing trip short.

YOWZERS, I could just imagine standing on the bridge watching the whole deal unfold.

Reminds me of when we had a new (to us) SF and tried the anchor for the first time. Released the chain and became mesmerized by all the debris flying off as the anchor and chain was plummeting to the bottom, the previous owners did not maintain her well, and the amount of sea junk and rust was amazing. Lost track of how much was dropped until we heard a large thunk and thankfully, there was a stopper at the end of the chain preventing the whole thing from disappearing into the depths. I agree with CaptJ that it is better to have some kind of rope/line at the end of an all chain set-up, as it is easier to cut the line in case of an emergency, rather than storing/finding/operating the rarely to be used chain bolt cutters.

I then worked for a boat manufacturer who would NOT include a chain/rode stopper at the bitter end nor a place to tie off in the anchor locker in any of his new boats. He found that there was a maritime law that would hold the builder liable for potential anchor mishaps if he did provide a connection point and therefore left this up to the owner (or Dealer). Keep in mind that this was in litigious Southern California, and he proceeded to tell me about the case and since there was no established securing location for the anchor line, he won that case, which is pretty much a rarity for any builder who fights and goes to a jury trial.

To the OP - what type of connection do you have for the bitter end of your set-up, and will you mark your chain/rode combination?

I just love the pictures in a wonderful shop.
I finally recognized it was an enclosed slip (lil slow at times).
    Double wow on all.

After making the splice we left the ends long and took the connection out between some cleats on the dock and loaded it up with a come-along winch by hand. Only after that did we finish the ends. I think that makes a difference and could have been the issue you encountered.

This was the tie off point that the Cabo has in the anchor locker. Would be curious to know if other Cabo's are outfitted the same. To mark the end of the rode we marked a 12 inch section 20ft from the end as a warning.

Thank you. I bought the building in 2009 and absolutely love having it to house the boat. Loft with couch and tv upstairs that is finished and work room for equipment and tools as well. The 40 Cabo is a perfect fit after some mods to house so I will not be moving up for a long long time.

    The boat house is awesome.

Yes, that is the factory tie off point for the anchor from Cabo. All of the Cabo's from the factory came with a Fortress, 6-10' of chain and around 300' of rope.......
