Luiz DeBasto 55-meter "Quartz"Shattering Glass House Stereotypes One of the most recognizable names in yacht design is South Florida's Luiz De Basto, a gentleman whose prolific penmanship has etched the lines on a vast variety of vessels. In his latest quest, the Quartz 55-meter, Luiz takes a minimalistic approach that is somewhat reminiscent of another great design visionary, the late Steve Jobs and his yacht "Venus", which launched after his untimely passing. (The following images and editorial are from the designer's perspective) The reason for this concept was the intention to develop a 55-meter which could provide our client with a luxurious and exclusive yachting experience of maximum visual and physical contact with the water and nature. In order to do that some old preconceived ideas about what a yacht looks like needed to be challenged. I was interested in exploring the relationship between the hull and superstructure and avoid the generic look we see in so many yachts today. However, to me yacht design is never a matter of style, it's a matter or architecture and technology working together seamless, achieving the type of results we can appreciate on a samurai sword or an iPhone. With this approach in mind there's no space for the cosmetic or superficial, everything has a function to fulfill, or even two, and its beauty comes from the correct use of technology.
