Cheoy Lee Global 103' Pilothouse Motoryacht
Downsizing Without Downgrading
Downsizing Without Downgrading
By Kevin Heistermann
The reality of the global economic downturn hasn't slowed down Cheoy Lee. Beginning in January of 2010 and through the coming summer, they will have sold 5 or 6 new yachts. Instead of battening down the hatches to weather the economic storm, they've taken the opportunity to develop a number of new vessels including the Bravo 88 - already under construction - as well as the Global 103 shown below.
The concept of the Global 103 came from Marty Isenberg of Cheoy Lee North America. He approached Mike Burvenich of MG Burvenich Yacht Design, asking him to come up with a concept for Cheoy Lee's next generation of mid-size motoryacht, a vessel that would succeed the very successful 95/100 series of motoryachts...

Holland Jachtbouw launches 62-meter "Athos"
Dutch yacht builder Holland Jachtbouw (HJB) launched their latest yacht called "Athos". The new vessel represents the largest privately owned two-masted schooner in the world. Measuring 62m overall and designed by Andre Hoek, the operation to bring Athos to water involved a dramatic journey through the Dutch countryside. Too heavy to lift with a crane, the wheels of a giant trailer were carefully inserted under the cradle and the entire 400-tonne structure was carefully driven on to a pontoon.
The next stage of this major logistical operation saw the barge and its precious cargo towed on a two-day journey from our yard in Zaandam (close to Amsterdam) to the northern Dutch port of Harlingen. It was here that Athos’ deep-V hull made her first contact with the water as the yacht was launched by a massive 2000-tonne lift...

The 312 tonne Status Quo has been designed by Ward Setzer of Setzer Design and the interior was a joint effort between Pavlik and Richmond Yachts. New Generation Vripack 42-meter Explorer
The sky being the limit encouraged Vripack to design a unique 138’ New Generation Explorer for a repeat client which will be launched Summer 2011. Interesting to know is that this sturdy and trendy displacement yacht is kept below 500GRT even though she has an impressive five decks.
The full beam Master cabin, with man height panoramic windows, and bathroom are located on the main deck, whilst 8 guests are accommodated in four cabins on the upper deck. As the Owner, Vripack and the builder, Cizgi Shipyard are not shy to push boundaries, this yacht’s construction combines three different materials, being a steel hull, an aluminum superstructure and a composite wheelhouse and navigation mast. This combination saves weight and keeps her in perfect balance as she is taller then many similar built yachts and also more comfortable...

The new MCC 38m Transocean Explorer
At the recent Miami Yacht and Brokerage Show MCC introduced their new MCC 38m; a yacht design in harmony with the times. Like the existing and soon to be completed 45m yachts, the 38m has the most economic single screw propulsion in the market with electrically driven Schottel jets for "get you home" security. The Schottels normally act as bow and stern thrusters easing maneuvering.
The original 45m Marco Polo was highly economical, not only in price but operation as well. Now the 38m - first MCC design of new in house designer Kasia Milewska - goes even further with an astounding 5300nm range at 11 knots for only 80 lph.
The owner will not only enjoy significant savings but will be confident he owns a green vessel. For the first time on an MCC yacht, he will tread upon kebony wood decks...
