Hello all, Anyone familiar with the G4 bulbs used in the salon overhead lights? I believe they are 24vdc. Cannot read the wattage at all, assume it is or was marked on the bulb at one time. They are wired in series it seems, 2 lights per circuit. I bought some 24vdc 20watt bulbs but they are much dimmer than the original bulbs. Not entirely sure what i should be using?
In series means when one is out, there all out, like old x-mas lights. Also they divide the voltage. With that, 24v boat, 2 lights per leg, new lights are dim, no dimmers used, maybe you need 12v lights.. This is a strange way to do it. I'm just guessing out loud.
They may look like they’re in series but I m sure that if you pull the fixtures you ll find connections in the ceiling powering each light How old is the boat? Fixtures often get replaced, upgraded and rewired so first thing is to get a voltmeter and check the voltage at a few fixtures. 20w is usually plenty bright
The breaker for these lights is 24vdc and the fixtures appear to be original. If i pull 1 bulb from 1 fixture a second light goes out, that was my first clue. Testing voltage at the fixture shows nothing but if you test voltage across the 2 fixtures i get 24vdc. I may try 12vdc bulbs just to see what happens, also try and find 40w 24vdc bulbs and see what that does.
G4 LEDs -- sidepin or backpin -- from marinebeam are mostly (all?) 10-30VDC. You can select from among choices how many lumens you mgith want, and which color temperature is your preference. -Chris
