Is the 4 cycle inherently more able to withstand higher ash but with the new addition of DPF not so? IDK, but it's not an important question to me as I have a set of 16V92's 2 cycles and it otherwise seems like a path to an extended argument.
My local boat store stocked "Rotella T sae 40" which below that stated it was "High Performance mixed fleet engine oil" It was not listed as "T1". This is the odd man out I've not seen it before and I cannot find it listed on any Shell website. The link with the MSDS for the "T" oil is not a Shell site but greatlakesoil so I think perhaps this oil is NLA? That's the info I'm looking for- we can all google and find what oil's are CF-2 rated but the Rotella T is the ghost here.
"Triple protection" is Shell Rotella code for multi grade; never to be used in a 2 cycle Detroit Diesel as you've pointed out.

The price difference between the Power Guard and Rotella is $30 a pail- and I need 8 pails to change oil. The decision to save money buying a cheaper product now vs high costs later is not lost on me- but I see no factual basis that any of the CF-2 rated oils are going to cause a issue which leads to a premature rebuild or other costs. I appreciate your advice and experience, thanks!

I did not intend my comment to de rail the thread.

What I meant was that Ash is a "necessary evil". Too much of it will cause problems in the ring packs of both 2 and 4 strokes.

The engines that use DPF's downstream have problems with any Ash as it does not burn off and will involve a manual cleaning, in your basic 2 stroke install there is only a muffler after the engine outlet and I have not seen any of these blocked by Ash so far.

that's what I took it as - the DPF would plug up. Thanks for the explanation.

See here http://rotella.shell.com/products/t1.html for Rotella products.

T is multi-grade, T1 is straight grade, T5 is synthetic blend, T6 is full synthetic. Lots o' certification details, etc., there.

That's been posted and if not it's already widely known but nowhere on it do I find the Rotella T high performance mixed fleet sae 40 which I speak of. Do you find it there?

Ah. Hadn't noticed it was the same link.

In any case, what I was focusing on is that it appears Rotella T (not T1) and any straight weight (e.g., 40) in the same sentence maybe isn't really an existing product. Did you actually see the bucket/read the label at the boat store? Or was it from an on-line listing that could conceivably have been corrupted?

pics taken this am- note that as well: " HD T1 SAE 40" not "T1 SAE 40" ; different than the website- I couldn't find T1 HD SAE 40. The store's label is the same number for both oils, but the bar code from Shell is a different number. Note HD T1 also lists MIAFL- perhaps it's packaged in Miami and the facility there has it's own labeling? Remember I also already posted the greatlakesoil MSDS of the Rotella T High Performance Mixed Fleet oil.

Well, I'm guessing the HD stands for heavy duty. It appears to be CF-2 rated, so you could use either one.

    OK, I got nuthin'. :)

Interesting one part of the label says T Engine Oil SAE 40 (T suggesting multi-grade) and the other part says T1 SAE 40 (straight weight, as expected).

    Phone call to Shell?

Wrong, If you read the label on the 5 gallon bucket in the 3rd picture it says "High quality single grade Heavy Duty Diesel engine oil" right under the big Shell Rotella print and above the HD T1 SAE 40.

The first pail simply states "High Performance mixed fleet engine oil"

I believe "T" does not stand for multi weight/grade; "Triple protection" seems to indicates that as that phrase is only used on dino based multi weight formulas while "T" in some variation is used on the rest of the Rotella line. With your suggestion I called and the result is posted below.

There are issues beyond that, to quote Detroit:

"The ash residue is related to the oil's additive composition and is significant in predicting lubricants which may cause valve distress, cylinder kit scuffing or exhaust catalyst plugging under certain operating conditions"

So I called Shell and got a technical specialist on the line and he told me the Rotella T SAE 40 oil was discontinued over 4 years ago and is not suitable for use as the shelf line is less than four years. He also said all Rotella T1 is "HD" and the marketing dept will sometimes insert that and sometimes not. I didn't ask him about triple protection nomenclature. At least I found out the difference! BTW I called the store and the manager is most likely going to pull the old stock after doing his own investigation.

I'd look more carefully at expiration dates and also think twice about purchasing oil from a retailer selling outdated oil.

I didn't comment on the oil itself as we don't use any form of Rotella.

I didn't see a manufacture date on the Rotella T, nor a expiration date; but I did not buy that oil. Did you see one in the pics I posted and missed? The T1 has a date of 6/14 and it's within the shelf life according to the specialist I spoke with. The store sells plenty of oil and this is the first I've seen of this Rotella T. I'd think it was NOS from the distributor and an aberration as the retailer is quality and service oriented.

Have you ever bought anything which was outdated at a store and if so did you ever go back to that store? ... you sound old and grumpy ;) -have a snickers bar! :)

Yes, I have stopped shopping at a store that frequently had outdated items on the shelves. If it's an isolated circumstance, I would not change, but I would be more alert in the future. You say it's a quality retailer so I wouldn't change. My comment was I would think twice and I would be on the alert.

If you think it's the distributor and not the retailer then I'd just let the retailer know so they could follow up with their distributor. And, yes, if I was the retailer and that happened, I would be concerned. Actually more concerned than as a customer with the retailer. Distributors know when items are discontinued and inventory is old. Someone in the supply channel moved discontinued oil and sold it as current.

And, yes, that makes me grumpy, sold over four years after it was discontinued. As to a snickers bar, I'll go for a piece of chocolate cake instead but guess I'll wait until after dinner. I guess the Snicker's commercial does work though and I thought it was a lousy commercial.

Might be right about the T. I didn't necessarily mean it "stood for" (some kind of obscure acronym? whatever) multi-weight, but it just seemed to me that -- from all the labeling I've seen on pails and websites and so forth -- that T (by itself) and multi-grade dino always happened in the same sentence. Whereas T1 is always straight weight. And so forth...

Interesting answer from the Shell tech; good that you've tracked that down and followed up with the retailer!

The retailer immediately removed the old oil, here's the replacement. Different label again and it does not show the CF-2 rating but instead CF-4 MAN MTU and CAT ???
