me change um oil how? OK i know a bit more then this sounds..... but still, my cap says SAE 40 so can i just use car sae 40 or is there a marine deal i should pay Attn too?
Check your manual. It may recommend a multi-weight oil and the wrong oil could void your warranty. Oil is supposed to be oil, but get a good marine grade oil. Rotella is good. Don't forget to have a sample of your oil analyzed and keep the record so you can check changes at the motors age.
Hi, Are you running gas or diesel engines? Using Rotella Lube in an older Gas engine will shorten it's life considerably as the detergent in the oil will loosen up any sludge and crap you have lurking in there and pump it around the engine.
Good point K1W1, but don't most oils today use detergent? If the motors have been neglected might a good idea be to do the change and back it up in 20 or 50 hours with another change to get that sludge out? BTW K1W1, you know WAAAY more than me on this. My questions are for my education. Thanks. Vista Sun, I just saw on your other thread that you have a 32 Carver. Those are undoubtedly gas motors right? I'm almost certain that your manual will call for multigrade oil (probably 15-40).
yes it is gas, and its a carver 355 1996 ( i need all the footage i can earn for braging rights! ) so i was thinking of changeing it now and then in 20 hours again.
A lot of guys use LOA when talking to people (braging rights) and LWL when booking slips ($). Not a bad idea, but if you give it soft use I might go more for 50 hours.
