Can someone please let me know is still CNC the main production mechanism and the use of CAD/CAM in place???? Anythin new recently?
CNC CAD CAM (and other TLA's) This is a difficult question to quantify exactly. Computer Aided Design & Computer Aided Manufacture is used extensively in the construction of modern yachts. Some examples include Finite Element Analysis (FEA) of the structure and other parts for strength. Computer analysis for performance and displacement etc. All the drawings be it electrical, structural or mechanical. CAD also plays an important part in the conception & visualisation of the yacht prior to construction. both from a construction angle and for the designer to present a good lifelike image for the client. Some examples of CNC applications I have come across lately include Cutting of plates, floor plates and cutting bending and welding of parts of the hull and superstructure. machining of interior woodwork deckheads etc. Of course all modern engines are designed and built using CAD/CAM and CNC technology. During a recent sea trial of a new 60m yacht I counted no less than eight laptops being used to analise the performance of various equipment in the engine room alone! all of which it can be argued is a form of CAM. As far as anything new IMHO there just seems to be an ever increasing innovative use of the technology rather than new breakthroughs. I hope this goes someway to answer your question I was heavily involved in CADCAM CNC before I caught the yachting disease and I have been truly amazed at the developments in recent years.
