Web search; New Kite System for Ships Trialed on Transatlantic Voyage When you find the video, looks like the kite is behind and slowing the ship down. This is helpful? Raises the bow out of the water a few (micro) inches?
The kite does appear to be trailing in a couple clips and this would certainly have an adverse effect. It is more probable the kite is being reeled in from a trailing position when the hull speed exceeds the available wind or the camera angle skews perspective. Here's a link to a long running thread on kite concepts... https://www.yachtforums.com/threads/new-age-trawler-motorsailer-kite-assisted-poweryacht.8127/
So we use kites alot when targeting sailfish. They fly at 45° to each other and provide at good bait presentation. They will just fall out of the sky occasionally and are extremely difficult to retrieve without breaking. This is from a stationary boat. Can't imagine trying a kite retrieval from a moving freighter. Could get serious fast.
