I was looking at a webcam that looks over Santorini bay, where the Cruise Liners moor up, and today there was a perquliar looking vessel in. I know the cruise liner is MSC Armonia, but can anyone name the boat on the left hand side, the red hulled craft. Incidentally, can anyone name the boat moored at the bottom, its there quite regularly. Thanks. Curious Jon
I seem to recall seeing it before... (red hull I mean). If memory serves, it was a cruise ship that was gutted and converted into a "luxury cruise vessel". Something along the lines of... it used to hold a couple hundred passengers in "standard" cruise accomodations, and now is set to carry a few dozen passengers in more high end luxury staterooms.
I recall its shape and looks, and i do also remember something similar Kevin, this is why i asked. Anyone fill in the blanks?
I would guess the peculiar vessel is a ferry for automobiles. But are cars even allowed in Santorini? Kelly Cook
Don't think so Regan... I found a pic of Le Levant and it's close, but not quite. Unless the super-structure and stern were drastically changed recently... http://www.blueheronco.com/image/Le Levant2.jpg
Agreed, its not Le Levant.. here is another image... http://www.marine-marchande.net/Flotte/K-O/Lelevant.jpg
How about this one? http://www.cretetravel.com/To_and_from_Crete/Ferries_Crete_Santorini.htm Actually I think this boat was originally operated by SNCM between Nice and Corsica. I used to see it come and go several trips a day about ten years ago. They are called Navires à Grande Vitesse, NGV, after the famous Train de Grande Vitesse(TGV) that goes from Nice to Paris a o.
I think we have a winner! Thanks AMG, the long bow is a dea giveaway, a most unusual looking craft. Bang goes the theory of it being a convert super yacht, or is this the case, was the ferry its previous use?
By looking at a few images of Le Levant, i think you're right Kevin, they are very similar shape, with the obvious addition of upper decks. Thanks people!
LE LEVANT is not that similar to PANAGIA THALASSINI or any of the NGV vessels which are looking like typical fast ferries. she was built Leroux & Lotz France 1998. Her lifeboat positioning reminds me of Le OCTOPUS she is a good looking mini cruise vessel though. nice candidate for conversion to personal yacht. PANAGIA THALASSINI was also built France but in 1996 at Saint Malo. The main sources for fast ferries in Greece are Australia and France. I guess the similarities you see are the french design. here is homepage for LE LEVANT http://www.ponant.com/ the schedule of PANAGIA THALASSINI stops 18/Sep so i guess she is just on stand by anchored at the buoy while arrangements are being made for after the summer. Cars are allowed on Santorini.
