    Although a lot less than it used to be, 19% of Holland is water. (And 25% of the land is below sea level, but that's another story). A LOT of people go out on the water in their free time. There's a lot of protected water where 20-25 footers can be sailed or motored comfortably. My first memories are on a sailboat.... lots of overnights in small cabins.....lol

    Don't know how it is now, but back then (70's 80's) the general level of seamanship was reasonably high. People knew how to "drive"/sail, dock, tie knots and varnish. (With the exception of the Germans in rental boats, but they could be recognized a mile away)

    I was actually in Amsterdam for one of the Sail days and watched the circus. Everyone smiling, little boats staying out of the way of big boats and ferries, water police around just bobbing and sitting back, relaxed. Fun to watch.
