How many life jackets do you have?

Are you looking to take an ocean cruise or just heading to Zachs Bay for an afternoon? Even if the boat can handle a dozen people, are you comfortable with that many on board at one time? With that many on board you definitely will be adding a few inches to the draft so watch your depth.

There may be a plaque next to the helm showing max passengers/weight. Failing that Bill's answer is your best. You could also check with Staten Island Boat Sales. Expect a somewhat muddled answer if any though; something akin to ____lbs. including passengers & gear. Even that number may be deceiving depending on where you carry it and what conditions you're in at the moment. That's where your experience comes into play. A good rule of thumb for a boat that size is that if all your passengers are in the cockpit and you have trouble getting on plane, you're over your safe limit and are also doing no favors for your motors. If you find yourself in that situation keep the weight low in the boat and reduce the numbers your next time out. If your boat looks like a Lk. Havasu houseboat during spring break expect to be boarded by the CG and possibly have your cruise terminated. Sinking is not as much of a concern as turning turtle if you catch someone's wake wrong. You'll also find that one number will work fine for slow cruising in the evening west of the Robert Mosses, but it will be a whole different number if you meet the crowd coming up the West channel in GSB around 4PM.

we call them SROBs around here: Standing Room Only Boats! very common at the Key Biscayne Sandbar

i've seen 35 carver/silvertons with so many bodies all over the decks that it looked like a cartoon! also, 25 to 35 center consoles with 20 or 25 people on board... local water cops usually look the other way.

your boat isnt' gong to sink or capsize but your guests areen't going to be comfortable over 15 or so. obvioulsy, forget about even trying to get on plane with that load, just keep it under 8kts.

usually when you have a large group on a boat, people naturally split between the cockpit/aft deck, bow, flybridge and saloon. that's why over 15 to 20 will feel really crowded.

one thing to consider on some boats is the lower waterline effect on the cooling system. if the risers aren't tall enough, you could ingest water in the engines. i believe it was happening on a number of Sea Rays in the later 90s where they didn't install tall enough spacers on the risers.

unlikely to happen on an aft cabin boat but a possibility on some express if you have to many bodies aft.
