Hi, It was called Eastwind when I was shown around it. I was not back in Lauderdale area with the boat ( G Whiz) till mid Dec 89 then on and off till July 91.
Anyhow she was built at NQEA at the same time as they were building the Fremantle class patrolboats for the Australian Navy the same personel were building warships when she was built so I imagine a lot of the same focus went into her construction.
Hi, Where those Patrol boats are or were based on a design by Brooke Marine in the UK. I think it was one of these deals where they ( Brookes) built one and the rest were built in Australia. This was explained to me by a crew member of one of them I encountered in NQEA when I was there July 89 to March 99
That is correct the first one HMAS FREMANTLE was built in the UK the other 12 or so at NQEA. HMAS FREMANTLE ran from the UK to Australia on her own bottom
Hi, I would like to say the Engines used were MTU12V396TE84 with ZF Boxes and the most amazing lack of reliability known to mankind at the time. I can quantify this statement by having served for 3 yrs with the 16V396TB94 Engines (3500 HP Each) and had nothing but troubles from Rocker Covers falling off/ fuel lines splitting/cooling pumps exploding to fuill scale turbo failures at anything other than high load. Full Bore it just got worse!! NB: My earlier post should have said I was there July 98 to March 99
Close but I believe that they are 16V595 years ago when I was on Nenika we did a W5 and the tech that came from Germany did the install on Fremantle and part of the delivery, I seem to remember thats what he told me. They are pretty heavy boats and are capable of sustaining 35 knots cruise 28 and short sprint about 40
I agree with you about 396 series MTU's I have now been on 3 boats with them and none of the ever missed a beat
