  1. The New DeMey 60 Power Cat
The DeMey 60 Power Cat is considered a beast by some and for one particular owner, it was his choice to acquire for some of the rougher waters that surrounds and stands between Australia and New Zealand. In fact, that body of water existing between the two countries is the Tasman Sea or 'The Ditch' as it is commonly known by seafarers from that part of the world. The South Pacific meets the Tasman Sea and those boundaries tend to be rough and the ocean water is being relatively 'squeezed' in the 1,200 nautical mile gap between the two land masses.
  2. The DeMey 60 Power Cat is 60-feet long and has a beam of 22.5-feet with a draft of just 3.5-feet and powered by a pair of 550 horse power Cummins QSB6.7 marine diesels. On board the fuel tanks can hold as much as 2,641 GAL and approximately 475 GAL of fresh water in storage tanks. The yacht is a New Zealand build and is hull one, pretty much a custom build of the yard for the owner. When it was time for delivery of the vessel in December 2024, the owner wanted it delivered to Sydney, Australia. Rather than put it on a ship and send it across the yard drove it across.
  3. The trip took three days and three hours with the DeMey 60 Power Cat running at an average of 16-knots and coming down to 11 or 12-knots according to the conditions. The reached Sydney with approximately 800 GAL of fuel left. The vessel can carry 2,641 GAL when full and if this is so they used an estimated 1,841 GAL of fuel to cross the 1,200 to 1,300 nautical miles.
  4. The vessel is said to be able to run as fast as 26-knots when needed. Carbon-fiber composites and e-glass epoxy with a foam core make up the yacht's construction which keeps the strength-factor up and weight down. If you are adventurous, the boat could cross the Atlantic with a full load of fuel and running at 10-knots it could sail from the Gibraltar to Barbados or St. Lucia.
