Here's a question...
When I have two normal sized people sitting in the stern on the gas tank, a small amount of water backs up through the scuppers onto the deck inside the boat - there is about 1/2 inch of water in the rear 2-4 feet of the deck. When I am idle, it builds up and eventually spills into the bilge where it is pumped out - but there is always a puddle there until I start to move. When I start to run, it drains back out - when folks move to the bow, the inflow stops.
Just doesn't seem right to me - anyone have experience with this?
Charlie... It was a bad design, I have been tempted to put scuppers in the side of hull above the water-line. Also looking for some type of check value to put in hose (which in my opinion is not large enough) that would stop the back flow.. I have owned a lot of self bailing boats over the years never did they drain below water-line.

The scuppers will help a little, but frankly the boat is too heavy and the deck height a touch too low. If you're redo'ing the floor or hatches and go with divynicel or other coring to lighten up the boat, it will help a lot......A lot of Dusky's always did this as well.....
Hey guys. Its been a while since I have posted anything. Looks like everyone is moving right along. Iam almost ready for primer on decks and gunwales, then hopefully paint before.it get too cold. Charlie, when you sit idle are those through hull fittings for the deck drains below the water line? Is your exhaust above water line? I would like to believe all should be above. I cant tell water line on mine as 35 years worth of bottom paint is quite the site! Ed might be onto something with raising them or put a check valve. Regards,John
We eliminated the deck drains entirely and installed automatic pumps to handle the water. We had the same problem with water back flowing into the aft deck when there was extra weight back there. I knew we would be adding weight to the boat so we had no choice, This also prevents a catastrophic failure if one of those hoses should fail and begin to allow water into the bilge. Very poor design from the factory. Our new exhaust outlets were installed a bit higher and are half out of the water while running at idle. Also I just added the happy hour lounge (wife required) to the bow. This is completely reversible with little trouble and with built in stowage for the table and post. We built the fwd floor hatch with hinges that allow removal in a snap.

I have the kill switch (standard inboard model) installed but not wired into the ignition yet. Question is: if I have a standard three position switch (off-on-start) with three terminals with a red wire, a purple wire (on) and a yellow wire (start) - note that these are confirmed by the stamps on the switch housing - and the switch obviously works correctly - that I can simply insert the switch in-line with the purple "on" wire, so that when the switch is closed, the circuit operates as it does right now (like its not even there) and when it is open, it breaks the circuit similar to when the key is turned to the "off" position - and there should be no issue with restarting when the kill switch is closed once again?

Like you, I am very worried that those scuppers are well below (~2") the water line, that flimsy flexible pipe seems ripe for failure and the bilge pumps can handle any rain water accumulation without even. I may just plug them from the inside.
My exhaust pipes were upgraded from 2" to 4" during repower. With nobody in the boat, those pipes are about 1/4" above the water line, which seems perfect.
Looks like Ed might make it to NYC early next year (Jan 1-5) for the boat show. I would love to introduce you to the guys that did my repower, i am certain they will be there.
As you are from NJ, might we be able to talk you into attending? It might be the first meeting of the Chris Craft Dory Restoration Club - Northeast Chapter.
I was thinking of a quick lunch someplace local (reservation under the name of Mr. Craft, Mr. Chris Craft - of course) then a short walk over to the show for the afternoon.

I wish I knew about the scuppers before I started, I would have raise the deck 3" Don't need all the freeboard of the original design, But to late now.
Repower... I found a 5.7 Mercruiser MPI 320 HP Closed Freshwater system Remanufactured direct from Mercruiser. It was one of the test engines used, than completely torn down and all new piston, rods ,cam, etc. I can get it for a little under $6,000 Will be going to check it out next week.
Getting cold here in PA nights down to the low 40s Glass to cold to paint, Looks like have to wait for spring.

Glad to see y'all are alive and well and moving forward. My problem child is now primed with block sanding underway, and we hope to start squirting finish in a week or two.
Al, that is a great looking forward seating design! I find myself wondering whether it's too late in my process to try to build one in, too. I can't tell all the details from the picture, but it looks like the forward under-deck compartment was used "as is" to create a "foot well" and the only structural modification needed was installation of a sort of dam to separate the foot well from the balance of the under-deck compartment with covering hatch? However you did it - well played!
Probably optimistic, but I'm hoping to take the finished toy to Key West for the Christmas/New Year holiday family gathering...

CCI, You are correct there is little modification done here. I found a teak shower mat online that was almost the perfect size, I just had to round the corners closest to bulkhead. Some SS angle iron to mount it to and voila instant floor extension. I did have this in mind from the onset as the storage hatches in the side of the underwell facilitated the fastening of the angle iron and the table base. Also, we used removable hinges on the original lid/hatch to make for easy removal. The table/post stores on the underside of the removable lid/hatch for easy access and storage. The whole thing goes back to fishing mode in about 5 min.
Fresh non skid and bright work..........used 2 Qts. Interdeck non skid, one white, one cream mixed. The original Awlgrip with 'sand' was a bear to keep clean. This Interdeck seems to be much less upkeep and really looks good over the old non skid.
Did your Chris Craft come out of the South Florida area. Namely Pompano Beach. There used to be one here that I guy I knew had back in the late 90's....and it had teak covering boards and a grey hull.
This boat was done in 07-08 in South Florida. It has mahogany trim and a light blue hull.
I'm pretty sure it's the same boat. I cannot remember the name of the guy who owned it. It was a very light gray back then and Merritt's did the covering boards on the boat. He had connections there and they did the work on the boat and haul outs etc...... He kept them oiled or natural, I cannot remember but they certaintly weren't varnished. I'm pretty sure it's the same one though.....
Under-Gunnel Rod Racks ???
My kingdom for a measured sketch of the teak "OEM" rod racks that mount to the hull liner sides under the covering boards... does anybody have these intact and is willing to measure and/or trace one for me? I assume (dangerous word) that all four of them would be the same dimensions.
