Anybody have any suggestions for a good varnisher is S. Florida. I am located in Coconut Grove. We have a 54' Grand Banks. We have a decent amount of brightwork on board and currently the toe rail needs to be stripped and Varnished. Haven't had very much luck with the last couple of guys (surprisingly, for the amount of $ they charge). Thanks!
I have been using Mr. Greene in Fort Lauderdale, not sure if he wants to drive down to Miami, but if so, he is one of the best: Owners would buy him tickets to Newport and to Spain to varnish their boats back in the heydays. He got a stroke and taught himself to use the left hand for varnish work. I used him for 10 years to varnish and clean my boats.
It's been 18 years since I've seen Mr. Greene! Used him for the toe rail on a Broward before opting to paint it; avoiding future varnish duties. Didn't go according to plan. Moisture and oils in the wood seeped through a couple years later. Had to repaint the toe again. +1 on Mr. Greene.
He is good, stripped all external teak on my previous (sail) boat and built up 12 or 15 coats. Big job but he kept coming early every day to start the job: Told him not to wake me up, just do your thing. Mr. Greene is God fairing, stayed away from booze and fast women, works hard but gives his money to the church so he is always broke and looking for work. Many a times I had to “invent work” to keep him busy. Present boat has no external wood, hence I lost contact, but the old phone number may still be current, send me a PM for details. (There should be an old thread on here about the same subject and person)
