    Hi.

Don't know if I'm on the right page here but.

I'm an Australian. Looking to buy a boat in USA Keep her there for a coupla yrs. Then bring her back home.
On her own bottom. Or deck Cargo. Depending how good she turns out as a sea boat.

If she is NON commercial. What licence do I need. if any.
and to What size vessel can I go to before compulsory Commercial licence needed?.

I was a deckie on North Sea trawlers in my younger life.
Diesel Mechanic by trade. In UK army and Plant fitter afterwards.
Single handed sailor to 45ft all my life. Including a few Ocean trips. UK\USA. Via Canaries.(several) UK S'th Africa. Sth Africa\Aust. All Pre '73.

The last 39yrs single handing round Aust. New Zealand. and a dozen or so Delivery's. up the East Coast mainly.

    70 yrs Experience I have. Papers I don't.

Here in Aust. a private "boat licence". Covers you to 23mtrs.
    NON Commercial.
Basically. What am I covered to in USA. If my licence recognised there.

I had a Trawler owners\Skippers licence in UK but that was in the 50's. early 60's.
    Probably not valid now.

In those days. If you owned a boat. and were landing fish. They gave you one.
In those seas. You were either a seaman. Or dead.
    Dogger bank North.

I owned boat. Mate ran her. and I went out when at home on leave.

Basically. What size boat can I go to. with present licence. If any.

I would like to see some of your waters while I still can..

    Regards

In the USA you don't need any license at all up to 200 gross tons, if you are using it strictly for pleasure boating when it concerns the US coast guard. No charters, commercial use etc....... Your insurance company might specify a license after a certain size depending on your previous experience and depending on the insurance company.

    Thank you.

    That's what I'm looking for.

I'm looking at a vessel around the 55 to 70 ft length.
    Up $1.5mill AUD. Max.

Hopefully a Trawler. But if I can find a Semi Displacement to around 20\24knot.
That is ALSO a decent Seaboat. I could be tempted.

At the moment I'm pretty interested in a 55\65ft Bering in Steel.
    I'm happy with that medium.
I've been waiting for decades. For somebody to do that.
    Trawler hull. Civilised Interior.

They are the baby version of my Screen Saver.
    "Harvester".
We used to fish in those seas..

I've had mainly steel yachts.. and can weld\repair if necessary.

If I get survey in US. and get vessel insured for worldwide cruising here in Aust. I'd be covered yes.

I've been with my marine Insurance Company here for 45yrs. 2 claims.
They like me. I get very good premiums.

What would be a fair price for a skipper and Wife. He navigating etc. she tidying cabins and cooking..for 6 months at a time.
I envisage doing the Intracoastal. Great Lakes. North West Passage.
    Then down the Alaska Coast.
and US to where we turn right. or ship her.
Depending on seaworthiness of whichever vessel.

I'm wide open at present. Not even sure on vessel type or size.
So am looking at all the Practical.. info, I can get.
Money limit I know. everything else will come.

I'm looking at around 3 or 4 yrs (Summers) in US.
Will that cover my trip in 6 monthly fulltime legs.
Laying her up on hard when away.

    Regards
