Can anyone advise if anyone produces aftermarket Kohler ignition parts? I have a 1987 7.5KW model which is begining to show signs requiring a major tune up. In the past I have carefully reconditioned, cleaned, scraped, polished and gapped the ignition parts. It may be time to replace the cap, rotor, points, and wires. The "Authorized Kohler Dealer" wanted a little over $700 for OEM parts! Any ideas?

    Hi,

How does that compare to a new Genset?

I'll play along. About 10% of the cost of a new genset. I just replaced the same parts, minus points on the mains. Came out to less than 2% of the cost of new engines. I think I still have the right to be dissapointed with the unusually high cost of OEM parts for my genny.

I had a 1996 40 foot Silverton with a Kohler generator. I believe the model was 8 something. Gas not diesel. The ignition wires looked tired to me. So I decided to replace them. They looked weird to my untrained eye. Not at all like the ones on any car I was familiar with. I called Kohler's dealer who had cheerfully raped me financially in the past. So I was prepared for their quote for new wires. Big bucks!! I returned to my bilge and sat there for the longest time staring at the genny. I stared and stared. Time passed. More time past. EUREKA! I finally saw something that had been there all the time. Molded right into the block were the letters F O R D. I raced off to my Ford parts dept and was told, "Dems not Ford car wires, dems Ford Truck. You gotta go -----. Well you know the rest . Ford Truck had the wires for about half of Kohler's dealer. I tell you this in the hope that you can find parts anywhere other than Kohler - even at a truck parts dept. Good Luck! PS I later found better Kohler prices at a big generator (like the kind building contractors haul around mounted on trailers. ) sales, rental and service company. Check it out in our area.

    Thanks Bliss

I knew it was a flat head Ford block that they used in tractors for years. I never thought of going through Ford for the wires. As for the cap, I would be very careful that it conforms to marine specs. It can't be vented and there are other requirements. I will look very carefully at the parts and compare them with the Ford parts. Thanks for the tip.

Are you running at all? Missing or not making power? That magneto will drive a zap thru a brick. If the cap and rotor are not in pieces why replace them? OR ya just want to throw some money at it and feel good? Magneto points usually last a lifetime unless the condenser has a problem. If the points look dirty, polish them back and replace the condenser with a universal pigtail cap. Those plug wires were solid strand, noisy (static on a radio) but last again forever.
The weak part of the whole mag unit is the non-metallic gear drive. If the genny is a keeper, start shopping for that gear now.

I would call Jim at Wavetop technology. Most knowledgeable generator specialist I have ever talked to. He is friendly and always calls back. Every time I sent him an email he calls me. Great guy! He has had parts for me in the past, and if he doesn't, He will point you in the right direction........

This is the place I use. Not sure how your prices compare.
