Hi, I have been experiencing issues with the starter igniting. Since all solenoids, starters, and toggle switches are new, I am suspecting the transmission neutral safety switch. Does anybody know where this safety switch is on a 1983 Bertram 28 Sportfisherman with twin Mercruiser inboards?
It s most likely built in the engine controls but on an old boat who knows how things have been upgraded
Borg Warner clutches has a switch on the top of the case. The only wires connected to the clutch if used. Similar for a Paragon clutch if used. Splashes water could of fouled up the wire end crimps. Panish controls did not have switched in them. The older TeleFlex some times had a neutral switch. Most Morse did not have a switch in them. My Bertram's Detroits and TD clutches do not have a neutral switch. My partners Detroit ZF does on the clutch. Something else, Bertram and many others have two solenoids to start the motor. Did you have this problem before all was new? Ever work after all this new stuff was installed? One or both engines? All 12Vdc? BTW; New means nothing. You may have inserted an issue. Your in Mill Cove?
My old Morse MT single lever dual action dash mount 1974 control on my Chris Craft has a normally open normally closed micro switch with in so motor won’t start in gear. The thing still works too. So that could be your problem. Other wise as others have said , same boat , on my velvet drive there is a contact on the top/ side of the gear that is also a safety switch. That will also keep it from starting if in gear. Come to think of it both those items on my boat might be tied together to keep it from starting I’m not sure.
