and the award goes to... Prepay, a 50' hatteras Sportfish and Alisa, a 68' Azimut While 99% of the boats cruising the ICW call up slower vessels to make passing arrangements, those two jerks passed us following each other, about 40' on our stbd side, north of Coinjock in a pretty narrow section, sending 4' wakes our way. No signal, no call on 16, no reply on 16 either. Lack or courtesy and violation of the ROR which mandate passing signals in inland narrow channels...
I had such a jerk passing me in July here. It was in one of the most narrow channels we have, with a 5 knots speed limit. I was entering with my motorsailer when a Storebro 420 flybridge boat passed me with twice the speed and then slowed down just in front of me so I had to pull full reverse to not hit him hard. It was inches in between and I was very close to swing a winch handle in the guys head. But this could have killed him so I let go.... His boats name is Bessy.
This thread will strike a chord with a lot of us. I've got a few stories of this nature, but in two of the most memorable instances, they were both caused by operators of Mangustas. Clearly, both operators (owners?) had more testosterone than a gym full of needle poking teenagers with insufficient projectile complexes. I truly believe paintball guns should be legal onboard vessels, so we can mark the sphincters that surround us. Short of that, we need to enact new legislation that will allow private vessels to arm themselves with torpedoes to target these idiots. This is a prime example of WHY we need licensing... and proof that many owners have more dollars then sense.
Capt. J, Pascal is onboard a 70' Johnson. Here's his live helmcam documenting his trip from Nantucket to Miami... http://www.yachtforums.com/forums/boat-shows-cruises/10120-nantucket-miami-live-helmcam.html
Courtesy Boater Award As a veteran of 170 north/south ICW deliveries, I too have seen my share of inconsiderate overtakes... mostly from the sportfish community. And, I make it a point to issue a courtesy boater of the day award on VHF 16 when the offense occures. Sometimes I get to have some face time with these idiots at the next fuel stop... a lot of these offenders are Foxtrot Charlie (Charlie=Civilian). Remember the adage, you can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it thirsty.
as much as hate generalizing, i must say that usually sportfishes are the worst offenders. the funny thing was that when we got to coinjock, they were both tied up there, about 1/2 mile apart. Passing each, i put it in Neutral, turned on the hailer and suggested that they consider reviewing the ROR and learn about courtesy... the docks were packed with boats holed up waiting for weather to clear! i don't know if the "skippers" were hiding inside or away form their boat, they never showed their faces...
I tried to make the quote small for better impact but I just couldn't choose the best part! That $h*T is just FUNNY!!! Thanks for a good laugh Carl!! ROCK
Hi, A guy I know carries one of these in his car in Jo'burg. http://www.paintballcrazecc.co.za/PaintballCraze/Peppergun kit.jpg These will evidently get the recipients attention in a hurry.
Most US boats are required to carry a flare kit and many (or all?) are mandated to carry a Very pistol to fire off flare shells. While I can only claim mixed success in brandishing an empty Orion at the Richard Cranium jetskiers who approach too closely at WOT to my kayak, I have it on good word that there are ammo shops out there that sell pepper-filled cartridges that fit (12-gauge?), surely a necessary addition to any yachtsman's inventory, and certainly mine for next season. "Make my day, punk".
Thank you. & yeah, there are really only 2 passions here ... 1. eat like there's no tomorrow; & 2. shop till you drop ...
Well, I don't necessarily see the need to slow down if he is on a larger vessel and there is enough room (say they pass at least 100 yards off the side) to not put his vessel in any risk of danger. If you're doing a delivery it is impossible to not upset someone along the way even if you don't mean to. It's also not feasible bring the vessel from cruise to idle speed and then back up to cruise every 5 minutes. It really depends on the circumstance. What these guys did was definately not polite, but it didn't violate any laws or nav rules. If they were in 40 footers should they have slowed down? It's like where do you draw the line...... a 3 foot wake shouldn't effect a 70' that much.......
The thing is not the size of the yachts, but the speed. A slow going boat that is overtaken by a faster will always roll. I have found it pretty easy to overtake by slowing down or changing the course so my wake doesn´t cause too much rolling. But many boaters do not even turn their head to see what is happening in their wake, I see those guys every day from my office...
i'm sorry but i dont see being on a delivery means slowing down is not feasible. I know, and observed, many delivery skippers pushing their boats hard because, well, they dont' give a ... Same attitude that prompts a 50' sportfish to come blasting with a 4' wake 50' from other vessels Passing signals are mandatory under nav rules, look it up... I'f you've ever caught a 4' wake at close range on your stern even on a 70 footer, you know how much you're going to roll... In a wide channel, you have time and space to turn and take squre on the stern with no roll. Not in a 150' channel. I slow down for other boats. Of course when i run at 10kts it's not a big deal, but when i run the boat at 22 i still do it. if timed properly it takes 30", what's the big deal?
When overtaking in the ditch, I like to give a shout on the radio or hailer to let the guy know I am about to pass that if he slows down to idle speed I can pass him without rolling him. Usually works really well.
